ive noticed that in many states smog regulations are differant for differant countys, I was wondering weather this was also true in california. I live in LA county but my car is registered in northern california (Sonoma County) all the cars ive ever owned have been registered in Sonoma County and Ive only had to get smog checks when i first buy a car, after that ive never had to havethe car smoged again. is this a lenient county or have i just been breaking the law for years and years?

cali has the same regs throughout the state. if your not getting smogged every 2 years you are not legal.

as far as an SR swap passing cali smog. dont know about that one. if you find a non-cali car you might be able to pass it. it will just cost you an extra 300bucks for registering a non cali car.

if all the smog equipment is working on the SR it should emit equal to or lower than the KA. and bumping up injector and turbo size should have little effect as most of the fuel is still being burned. the biggest problem with not passing emissions is unburned fuel. tubos tend to be quite efficient in this respect even at idle if you have FI (carbed turbos run quite rich at idle)

SR20DETs themselves pass emission tests easily. In Japan, emission regulations are much stricter than those in California and Canada. SR20DETs are made for performance purposes, but they are also built to comply with Japanese domestic laws.

Most people fail emission tests with their SR because they either remove the EGR system or plug the AIV. Doing these will make you fail emission.

In Canada, all SR20DETs pass emission tests easily. The only key to passing is to leave the emission devices on the engine. Don't remove or disable any of them.

In California, the DMV will send you a notice if you require a smog check to re-register. I know that some people are able to drive cars with plate from other states, where the smog laws are more lax. For example, my mechanic has a vehicle registered at a property of his in Arizona and every couple of years he has to make a trip out there to pick up the paperwork. I'm not sure the intricacies of that though. Also around here, Hawaii and Oregon plates seem to be popular among Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsches, etc owners.

The rumor is that the SR20DET will pass out the pipe if it's in good running condition. I have not yet smogged my own, nor known anyone who has passed out the pipe to verify that.

The visual inspection is enforced as stringently as anything... read: it varies from place to place. For example, there's a local spot where I am that the guy will look at the plate on the vehicle, type the VIN on your DMV print-out into the computer, and check the sniffer to see if it has passed or not. Some places will even give you a "pre-test" on the sniffer if you explain that you know your car might not pass, and are interested in getting it fixed first if that turns out to be the case. More frequently these days, those places / that level of rapport with the testing guys is getting somewhat difficult to find / develop.

If you need to pass a visual inspection, I suggest that you drive around your town and go in and talk to the people. Go to the independent shops, that look like they've been in business forever. Think Long Beach, Riverside, Costa Mesa, East LA, etc. Be straight up with the guy, say, "Look, I got this engine, it's clean, it'll pass out the pipe so we're not ****ing up the environment... what's up, can you help me?"If they are willing to help you out, realize that you're going to compensate them for helping you out.

I bet you won't have to have that conversation more than five times. And given the general level of apathy in the world, there's no way that anyone who turns you down is actually going to try to hold you, call up the cops / EPA / DMV and have you fined right there on the spot. You know?
