Hey guys,Something has caught my eye locally. I have some questions though since I have never had to deal with an import or kit car registration not sure of the process of things.
Question one are there any legally registered mid 90's skylines, 1996 model specifically, in the state of california that are also BAR approved?
Question two Assuming #1 is doable how hard is it to get insurance on it? compared to cars like the 240 or z is it grossly over that rate?
Question three The one that caught my eye is going for 38,000 asking price. Is that a reasonable price for it? car has 50k on it but is in excellent condition.
Please only reply to this post if you have valid info on the specifics.

question 1:
I don't know what BAR is but ifyou meant CARB, then yes, the car is "technically" within their guidelines as long as it came through Motorex.
Question 2:
They are insured as "stated value" meaning you tell the insurance company how much you want in case of a total loss, and you pay for that amount of coverage. My insurance will be going up about $120/month if I ever get the damned thing.
Question 3:
$38 is CHEAP for a R33, beware... and VERIFY the car has a vin substitut tag in the passenger side of the windshield. if not, then this car is not legal and can and will be impounded if you are ever caught on the street with it.
BTW, 96's are OBD II cars and Motorex doesn't have a OBD II compliance package yet accepted by the EPA so it is either not a real 96, it is a real 96 imported as a 95 (likely) or it is a 96 brought in illegally and you will be hosed if you buy it.

thank you very much I see yours is a 1996 . I assume yours was brought in as a 95? I am not sure how it was brought into the country but it is already here and its in Nevada. I have not seen the car in person yet. It is listed as 50 state legal I know it has to have a label on the door jamb for smogging. I reffer to it as BAR(bureau of automotive repair) approved cause I am a licensed smog tech but CARB is what I meant.

the VIN substitute goes in the windsheild, not the door jam. It will be made of metal, similar to a regular VIN tag on USDM cars, only it says something like "VIN substitute per section XXX of code XXX (insert chassis code here)"
Mine is still in customs and I have set a deadline of 31MAR04 as either I get my car or I get a refund and I'll buy one from someone in the country who got one from Motorex. Goodluck with the transaction, though 38k is pretty cheap. Is this the one on Ebay from "TheNewFuelImports"? If so, beware.

no its in a local paper here. but the car is currently in nevada so I am already a little leary on how it got here.

The label I am refferring to is not the same as what your reffering to. The label on the door I am refferring to is similar to the underhood label with additional info from the refferee smog station. It allows any old smog shop to perform biannual smog inspections by entering a specific number from the label. It has nothing to do with registering it through DMV. But it can not be issued that label unless it has been through the DMV process already.
