Hello All-

I am brand new to this site and am really hoping some of you would be kind enough to chime in and advise. I live in Md. and have a California regulation or whatever QX4 that has failed Md. emissions. So of course, I can pay over $2k just to replace the cats, do them one by one to get a waiver (MD. says if you pay more than $500 you can get a waiver) or whatever. I have the following codes from the State of Md.:
P0420
P030
P1140
P1491
All of those add up to be several different possibilties. i.e Vacuum cut bypass valve, 02's, Intake valve timing control, etc. I really just want to know where I can get the California version of the Cats the cheapest? My truck has 152k on it and although it runs well, it's nothing I want to break out $2,500 for. I would rather sell it. Please advise.

thank you all...

P0420 TW (Two-Way) Catalyst System, Bank 1
P030 cat related
P1140 Intake Valve Timing Control Position Sensor, LH Bank 1
P1491 Vacuum Cut Valve Bypass Valve

I'd leave your cat alone for now, check your Oxygen sensors, what is MPG like, verify with a timing light your static timing along with your advancing mechanism and look for vacuum leaks way before condemning your catalytic converter.

I think this problem can be solved if not by you by an intelligent mechanic with no axe to grind and a company wanting to do the job right instead of fleecing someone.

Run a small tank of propane raw to see if it sucked into the engine and revs up...proof of a vacuum leak.

Prove out the timing

Prove the combustion is not too rich.

Reset all the codes and start over. You will need some tools, a good OBDII reader, vacuum gauges, hand tools, small propane bottle $5, hand tools and time

Good luck.

ARK-
You seriously sound like you know exactly what you're doing. Problem is, I dont understand exactly what you're telling me to do. I agree with you 100% about the vacuum leak possibility and just don't know what to do on my own or tell a mechanic what to do. If you would be so kind, would you allow me to call you on this? I have already printed out what you wrote and will share it with a mechanic. I don't have anyone that I know personally, so I will have to spend some $$$ just to perform the steps you outlined above. I dont have an OBDII reader either, but whatever I can do on my own to ensure its not the CATS is worth the investment. If you give me a number, I can call you maybe Sunday?
