HKS makes an exhaust thats quiet and yet not to flashy(almost stock looking). Also, cops in cali dont care if you have a legal exhaust. I know a bunch of toyota owners that own a TRD 50 state legal exhaust. Even has a certificate of legality. Cops dont give a damn.

was this southern california, Los Angeles area?i almost got pulled the other day when a cop saw my car and then creeped right behind me looking for an exhaust i'm sure. luckily i had my stock on at that time. i was coming home from the track, and i decided not to change to my real exhaust that day! lucky me!i WISH IWSH IWSH i could just use my real exhaust every day, but it's pretty loud, even with the silencer in.

Alot of cops in San Francisco don't give a flying rats arse but cops in San Jose do (cuz they've nothing better to do but shoot minorities and go after stupid stuff than the real stuff).

I've been told that any modification to the exhaust system is technically illegal in CA but my neighbor who's a cop never seems to care. I guess it depends on who you encounter.

The law technically in CA is that you can replace your exhaust if your old one is bad, and they can't require you to use OEM equip. But it can only be from the cat back (all emissions equip has to stay in place) and it has to remail under 95db at all times. In reality though, it's a very subjective law and cops will give you a ticket anyway and it's a hard thing to prove to a judge that it's under 95db.

yea, but cops dont give a rats. They will say you modified your exhaust. Even like the INJEN intake that has the CARB# on it, they still dont give a phuck

its hard to prove? have the judge or officer come out with a db radar or whatever it is and test it. If its like 80db whomp whomp oh well ticket go bye bye

Smog Legal exhuast in California? You don't even need a CARB sticker for it. Have you or can you pass emissions? If so, just go to the referee the next time you get an exhaust ticket and have them certify your exhaust. (certification is only for those issued citations) Yes, 95db is the limit, and you should easily pass that with most, if not all catback exhausts. Once you get certified, your ticket and charges get waived, and the next time some f*cking a$$hole cop wants to give you a ticket, you can tell him to cram it up his ***, LITERALLY.

In fact, print out the CHP bulletin too so you can really make that cop feel like a jackass.

Just make sure everything else in your car complies...

ok to clear this up, exhausts have no effect on emissions so they do not fall under a referee or a smog technician. Exhausts only have to meet the 95 db and under requirement.

If you change the downpiping, or remove the cat then you are asking for trouble. When taking the class to get my smog license (which i am too lazy to actually get), basically you look for chrome. Since nobody uses chrome OEM, thats why you look for it.

Quote from the Smog Check Inspection manual from the BAR "You are not required to inspect components that are not visually accessible. Do not disassemble, raise, hoist, or lift the vehicle to conduct this inspection. The only tools needed are a flashlight and a mirror."

Now if you do go to get a smog and your car is so low that they cant see under the car or cant get it onto the dyno, then you are reffered to a ref, where he will tell you you HAVE TO RAISE THE VEHICLE back to stock ride height.

sorry but I didn't have time to read all the coments

I'll say this much.. in CA, you need to have your exhaust sound less than 95Dba

I got a ticket for my N1 duals.. went to a calif referee and got it tested for sound

failed the first test (they test 3 times)

then got silencers (passed all 3 times)

so now I have a sticker that says my exhaust "Apex-i" is legal in california according to the whatever code that is...

Oh, and if you have a smog pass cert then you are good to go..

if the cop pulls you over you can just whip it out and show it to them...

dunno if it would work.. I haven't needed to do it since I got it checked...
