Clean it good, hahaha. Then use some terminal protector spray stuff (available @ local autoparts stores).

You can either clean it w/ battery cleaner spray & a terminal brush made specifically for battery terminals (available @ local autoparts stores also).

Or the cheap way is lemon/lime & club soda.

Once all the old stuff is cleaned out of the terminals and connectors and surrounding the battery. Spray on battery terminal cleaner onto the terminal & connector (it looks sort of pinkish/reddish when sprayed out - at least mine did). After that you should be golden.

It is coroson and you nee to get rid of it. among other methods is a thin paste of Bakeing soda and water to neturalize the acid. Then flush with plenty of water. Then use some terminal protection spray.

Also those Red and Green felt washers they sell ($2-3 set) do work. Try and find a set that are fresh. If they have visable liquid in them they will work. If they are hard and dry they won't work very well.

Either way, once you get it clean, keep the battery clean and dry and you probably won't have a problem again.

Good luck with that man.

Last fall, i used the speciallized tool and cleaner to clean the terminals on the battery, bought new positive and negative wire terminals (with the felt washers) and then doused everything in dielectric grease.

Still had corrosion grow on it over the winter THIS MEANS WAR!

just bought a braille light weight batter and will be mounting it in the trunk with ALL new hardware this spring.

I don't think dielectric grease helps as much as the battery terminal protector stuff... of course, I'm in a much better climate area than you are .

I Do believe that battery terminal protector stuff is made out of the same stuff as dielectric grease.

I guess, I wouldn't know. All I remember is when I use dielectric grease, it was greasy. Battery terminal stuff, nice spray action.

Actually, any type of coating will help. Spray paint and white lithium grease work well too.

The problem is caused by the hydrogen gas reacting to the metal in the terminals. So any type of barrier will help. But if it keeps happening with regularity, you probably have a battery that is leaking. Batteries have vents that are supposed to vent the gasses away from terminals. You may have some sort of crack in the battery allowing the gasses to vent around the terminals.

If you're battery is older than 3 years, just ditch it and get a new one. Make sure that it is properly secured. If it is able to move, vibrate, or bounce around at all, you'll damage the plates inside and posiibly crack the housing.

Buy an Optima battery.
