I know there are cages available to buy, but for my senior project Im building a "Drift ready car". So, I am going to go 5 speed, weld the diff, put the coils in (again), and build a cage. My step dad (a professional welder) wants to know where we can attach the ends of the tubes. Im thinking from 4-6 point cage. ANY input would help a bunch, thank you guys!

are you doing this on a convertible?

if so, are you trying to keep the rear panels without putting a huge hold through them?

I think this design is nice. I believe he can also close his top.

Thats a nice design. As for the panels, it doesnt really matter, I would like to keep the speakers working, though.

Do you or your step old man know anything about cages?

Not many on this site will cage their car, i did so i will try to help you a little.

I am assuming you have the correct tubing and tools. you MUST attach the ends of the tubing to a plate that is at least .125 thick and 6x6.

you can attach the rear to plates you mount in the trunk or to the shock towers, but you must remove the rear seat brace if you plan to attach to the shock towers. I attached them to the trunk floor because you get a funny angle if you try to do the shock towers.

For the main hoop, you will have to remove the lower portion of your seat and attach it there. Dont try to attach it to the floor. Thats where i made a fatal error. you wont be able to move your seat back far enough to get comfortable. I have a Recaro spg that wont fit now so i am going to cut out the cage and make a better one!

need anything else? Let me know, i will try to help you.

That is perfect! Thank you so much.

And my stepdad knows a lot about cages, he just wasnt sure where we are going to bolt/weld it down without the cage ripping out.

no problem.

ya, the main reason of the 6x6 inch plate is to make a large enough area so the cage wont 1 poke though the floor and 2 make a large strong area so it wont rip out too!

if you are going to make a bolt in cage then you are on your own for mounting spots, and be sure to make backing plates so your bolts dont just rip out of the floor too!

I don't know about drift rules, but I was checking some AutoX rules around here, and if I remember correctly (which I probably don't), cages have to be bolted in, not welded in.

If anyone else has anymore info on the matter, that'd be cool. I am just trying to picture a way to toss in a cage that I could take out if I really wanted...(I wouldn't keep the back seats of course).

SCCA and NASA says it can be bolted, or welded; but it has to follow the mounting regulations as stated in the rule books. (along with most pple) I'll be welding mine in...

Question: Will this work?

We are thinking of cutting the speaker panel as shown:

Then thinking of welding it to number one ideally, but we are not sure if the top will clear this when going down. So, we decided on two back up points on the wheel well. We will weld thicker plating to it on numbers two and three for more support.

Also, on the floor we are thinking of welding the Hoop support to this corner.

Any better plans or ideas? Input at all? Anything will help

What seat are you going to run and do you plan on running a fixed back bucket any time soon?

If yes to the fixed back, keep in mind that different seats have different angles on the back. Sparco is different than Recaro, and Bride is different too. I have owned all three kinds.

If the main hoop is too close to your seat it puts it with in head banging reach. Also if the hoop is too far forward your seat will hit the harness bar.

Test fit everything! you dont want to have to do it again it gets costly. Make sure your seats dont hit your cage. Make sure your head wont hit your cage. It will hurt even if it is padded and you are wearing a helmet. Sorry i dont get on here too much i will check back more regularly to give you help.

if you are going to mount your cage to the wheel well i would say point # 1, i went further back so i could spread out the distance that the cage would protect. Oh ya, you need to weld thicker plating on any point that the cage touches the body, 20 gauge sheet metal is far too thin to be welding to. also if you do not weld a mounting plate your car will not pass tech.
