yeah, definately dont try to take on a ca project if you have no money. the ca, while cheaper initially will cost you quite a bit in the long run. ive spent over 7 grand under the hood of my car and i can safely say that at least one third of it was on replacement parts from when the car broke down on me. now im in no way saying the ca is bad, or that you shouldnt get one as i love the engine to death, but just be prepared for little things that pop up and require you spend 100 bucks for the car to run again.
if you have another car and are in no hurry however, the rules may change a little. it probably wouldnt kill you if you built up an engine slowly. i bought my 240sx with a dead ka24e and built it up over the course of about a year before it ran. i had a van i could drive so not having it wasnt a problem.
if i may make one suggestion though, i think it would be wise to have a ton of money ready when you do this. itll be cheaper. you wont be like me and spend $450 on a rebuild for your stock turbo because you dont have enough for a new, upgraded unit. now that ive upgraded i have a perfectly good ca t25 thats worth jack, but cost me $450 that i could be saving to spend on a standalone. arrg. life isnt fair.
and yes, the ca is turbo'ed from the factory in the form you are speaking of. it is possible to get a non-turbo rwd engine, but your ka has more grunt than that.
