Cabin Noise? Is a G37 Manual louder in the cabin than a G37 Auto?

I'm new to this forum and am considering purchasing a 2008 G37 Sport. I read a review somewhere that compalined that the manual version of the car was too noisy in the cabin at highway cruising speeds, and that the auto version was much better.

Any thoughts on this subject from you guys who have driven both?

I haven't driven either car but I know from experience that the manual transmission is just plain louder than the automatic. I am not sure if its the fact the tunnel is cut bigger for the manual then the automatic...

But buy which ever one pleases you, But I know I would love the manual.

I tend to agree. Granted, I had to get automagics for both of my cars due to my wife....

Regarding the automatic.... do the paddle shifters give you the same power control as the manual? Do you know if the manual transmission "feels" faster than the auto?

To answer your question. I think at HWY cruise you here more of tire noise than the transmission related noise. G is not a quitest car in this segment. I probably wouldn't buy it if it was. I like to hear the respond from the engine.

Your best bet is to testdrive both and see what you think. Some say the auto is faster some say the oposit. With paddle shifter or tip tronic manual you can shift where and when you want to shift. I really hate some of the so called sporty cars when you hit close to the redline and it shifts for you even when you are in manual shifting on tptronic. Thank little Jesus the G is not like that.

I own a G37S which only comes with the manual transmission. I have driven both manual and automatic transmission versions of the G37, but not back to back. If there was a difference in cabin noise level, it wasn't enough to get my attention.

The automatic G37 had the Sport option which means the same 19 inch wheels and tires as the G37S. Automatics without the Sport option come with 18s. It wouldn't surprise me to find that a car on 18s is quieter than the same model on 19s.

I should point out that I am quite sensitive to cabin noise. It's the principal reason I turned up my nose at a Porsche Cayman. After an hour test driving two of them, I'd had enough of the drone from the engine and the tire noise. Last summer, my wife and I covered 750 miles in one day in the G37S with a couple of stops for gas and food. To do that in a Cayman, I would want ear plugs.

My advice would be to buy whichever transmission you prefer to drive and not worry about noise levels. The new 7-speed automatic is very good, but not enough for me to give up my manual 6-speed. If Nissan were to develop a dual-clutch, electrically-shifted transmission like Porsche's PDK, I might change my mind.
