Back when the J was developed allergenic filters did not exist for automotive applications. The J simply sucks in outside air and circulates it through the car sometimes heating and cooling it. For a more detailled illustrated view go here: http://fuzzycats.com/j30parts/page_756.jpg

i making one.easy.with replacable carbon filter yep,they dont have them in a j.i want to do a carbon and filtrete filter...mine will be in the recirculating system.it would have to flow decent so not to burnout fan motor.somethimg ive wanted to do anyway.

Exactly..... The motors on the newer cars with cabin filters are designed to take the extra load, and I would presume are a lot larger, than the ones from the j30 or Q45..

All Q45 after the G50 have interior air filters. And they do work.
