Where is the most ideal spot to place a cabin air filter on a automobile? Is it before the blower motor (Cowl) or after the blower motor (After the Darlington resistor aka "Blower motor resistor")? where can the filter be placed to cause the least back pressure or is that more dependent on how restrictive the filter is?

This topic does belong in the engineering section but the Q45 section gets slightly more traffic.

I work in a shop now and have seen many different cars and the ways they are put together. BMW for the most part of what I have seen places the cabin air filter in the cowl, But its a very long and narrow one. Ford and some Volvo's have them in the cowl as well. But Infiniti puts them if front of the blower motor (Nissan President's (Yes 1989 and on) and 1997-2006 Q45's). On the Nissan Versa its in the cowl.

Some how the Nissan President has a square filter that looks like it is placed in the cooling unit (Houses the evaporator and the Darlington resistor) But the evaporator (1990-1993 Q45 CFC-R12) is 3 inches wide. Based upon the pictures below (1994-1996 Q45 R134) their is very little if any room to mount a cabin air filter after the blower motor:

The Japanese cars I've been around use the filter to clean the air before it touches the blower fan. I've heard people call that a "clean air" blower as opposed to a "dirty air" blower. When I change the filter on the other cars, there is usually a lot of pollen and some oak tree garbage caught in the filter. I wouldn't want the stuff I see in the filter going through any HVAC system.. I kind of wish the Q had a filter..

Well I took apart the blower motor and saw the reason to have a cabin filter after the blower motor. There were metal flakes/shavings (From the brushes) EVERYWHERE!!! Their is a "vent?" on the blower motor (1990-1993 plastic flex tube or 1994-1996 have a rubber hose) to makes matters worse.

What are the brushes part of the blower motor made of? Hopefully not LEAD as I read from a post on NICO in another topic.

Electrical motor brushes are generally made from carbon.

Thank you!

So if I were to tell you all that a cabin filter could indeed be made for the 1990-1996 (G50) Q45 would you no be interested? The thing is it would have to be custom made but it would be extremely easy to replace!

All I ask is some info as to where the proper location for one is.

I would have been EXTREMELY interested in retrofitting the Q with this filter years ago, but now is too late for me as I only have 22K left to hit my goal of 300K......should be about 11 months or so, then hopefully the Q will get replaced {maybe with a Prius if gas prices get much worse!}

I would assume the most important things to consider when placing this filter would be to find a location AFTER the mix door that blends/chooses recycled air/fresh air and BEFORE the evaporator{which catches and clogs with tons of debris}....great project, especially if one takes the time to actually see the airflow blocking crap that collects on the face of the evaporator, hindering AC efficiency, plus the added benefit of less dust blowing around the interior of the car !

Carbon filter would indeed be interesting.

The beauty is we can all make our own (or buy one off me) cabin filters.

How hard is it to remove the blower unit if it needed replacing (if one wanted to keep the car all original)? Obviously the three screws cant be all it takes because this is a Q after all.

Come are you the only guys interested in this? If it makes anyone feel any better I am not making this up at all. I have found one location to mount a filter but that would only filter the air coming into the vehicle. So yes you would need two filters to replace but the recirculated air filter would need to be replaced every year or less depending on how much that function is used.

Recirculated air takes in outside air, which is never quite sealed. So one filter location would be sufficient.

On my truck, the filter is located between the fan and the evaporator coil. I'm not sure of the location on the G in relation to the fan. The truck actually came with a cover over the filter location, and no filter - they were optional. The filter kit comes with a metal clip that holds them in place. I used about half a can of Air conditioning coil foaming cleaner that I bought at Home Depot for about $5 to clean the coil before installing the filter.

Now my truck has a really strong lemon/chemical smell, but I'm sure it'll go away after a day or two.

The trick is making a filter "rack" in the evaporator box, so that nothing can go around the filter. That's going to make it necessary to remove the evaporator housing (and vacuum the refrigerant system) in order to access everything enough to fabricate a channel that the filter will slide in to.

Once you figure out the size of the evaporator housing, you should be able to find a cabin filter that's close in size by browsing through the stash of filters available at WalMart or an auto parts store.

How hard is it to remove the blower (motor) unit? If its easy I have an idea for a second (Recirculated) cabin air filter!

Well I made two cabin filters and I could not get them in place. In fact the last one I crumpled it up...

So I need to make a tool that would allow for easier installation rather than the two people install with the glove box removed.

Does the 1997-2001 Q45 evaporator box will fit on a 1990-1996 Q? I believe a member by the name of "Analask" mentioned the idea.

I don't know if 1994-1996 Q's have the piece of metal sticking out like my Q has.
