I've been searching for a set of OEM or higher quality Valve Stem Seals. The only thing I can find is the Pulsar ca18de VSS. When I searched for SR20DET VSS I got a bunch of sites that either said DE or DET or they just said specifiy DET when you ordered.

So my question is if the CA18DE VSS will work well enough?

So my next question is the difficulty of replaceing them? I mean I've done alot of external motor work (swaps etc.) but when It comes to replacing internal parts I start getting woozy. I was looking at the pictures of davids rebuild Thread and it appears you really can't get to them without taking the head off??

Any help or suggestions on special tools would be appreciated.

Even though i didnt do them myself, i dont think its too hard. If you find the right tool(s) for the job, im sure it would make it that much easier! I took it to a rebuild shop and they did it for me along with a few other things. The thing that makes it hard is the fact that you have to remove literally all parts of the valvetrain. This means cam covers, caps, hydraulic lifter, keepers, retainer, spring, and then the valve. Theres one other flat washer on the opposite side of the spring where the retainer goes. The stem seal will be at the bottom and theres gotta be a tool that goes in there and grabs it from the sides. Its very tight in there so i couldnt see how it could be done by hand.

Heres a link to a pretty damn good walkthrough of a valve stem seal job. It shows the special tools that were used too. Its not a CA specific, its from a Ford Taurus SHO but gives you a good idea of what to expect, with the heads on! Also part of the valvetrain of this engine is very similar to the CA's.

this is quick and dirty way for removing the vss use some needle nose pliers and use your fingers to keep them centered as to not scratch the lifter bore, just rotate them while pulling up slowly. keep all lifters in order and soak them in oil, keep each valve with its coresponding spring and so on.

Use a heat gun to heat them up first. This will help a lot.
