Hello All,

I am having some major issues with my swap and I for the life of me cannot figure out what the deal is…

I have a CA18DET swap in my ’69 510 and the swap is complete. However, the car turns over and will not fire. It sounds as if it is almost there, but it won’t catch or run on its own. The car smells like it may be running a little rich and has blackish smoke whilst turning over.

All the ECCS and ICAV have been deleted and I have a fuse panel that I purchased off of the datsun forums in place to eliminate the ECCS and run the puel pump and provide power etc.

Symptoms:
-Turns over
-Kicks blackish smoke

What I have checked:
-Correct firing order
-Base timing
-Ignition timing
-Injector resistance 2.0 ohms
-Injector pulse
-Spark plugs are new
-Gas is new
-CAS fires injectors when spun by hand
-Compression 150lbs cold
-New oil
-Vacuum leaks
-Tight BOV
-Fuel Pressure
-Grounds that I know of according to the schematics

What other sensors would cause this car to not function properly? Could the car not start due to the immobilizer or something of that nature?

Thanks,

I have a feeling that I have something wired wrong...

I have only the Injectors, CAS, Coilpacks w/ dropping resistor and transistor, throttle harness and MAF, so its pretty minimalistic.

I don't have an 02 sensor as I will be running a wideband (Could this cause it not to start?).

I also don't have a wire that would power the ECCS (Black / Yellow) coming from the ECU.

Lastly, I do not have any wires for the IACV from the ECU hooked to any relays.

Pull the codes from the ECU and see what it says. The lack of Engine Coolant Temp Sensor may not let it start. Also, not having the knock sensor hooked up is going to make it run on the fail-safe timing map and you're going to give up a lot of power because of that.

I have the coolant sensor hooked up and it was checked with a multimeter. The correct resistance is present.

The knock sensor was tested for continuity. There was none, so a resistor has been soldered in place.

As far as the codes go, I am unable to retrieve any codes. The ecu flashes slow in the following order: once, twice, and fast three, four, five.

Those are the different diagnostic modes in the ECU itself. You have to select one by turning the dial on the ECU, next to the flashing lights, clockwise to select a diagnostic mode.

Yea, read the FSM again. There are 5 diagnostic modes. IIRC, it's mode 2 you want, but look at the FSM to make sure. Once you get to the mode you want, you turn the dial in the opposite direction, and then back again.

First of all, do you have a wiring diagram for a standard CA18DET harness? If you don't, I suggest you source one before you zap your ecu and really be screwed. I can tell you straight-up that your harness is not quite wired correctly, but until you get an idea of what wires do what, I suggest you leave your car alone. Please take my advice or you will be hunting for another ecu very soon.
