'88 Pulsar NX SE is right. And as for installation... **** the manual. I followed it to a 'T' and my timing was still off by a tooth. My advice is to line up the timing marks, hold them in place somehow (preferably a second set of hands, then put the belt on. Cross your fingers and pray its all lined up.

If you don't have a second set of hands, vice grips work quite well on the cam gears, just don't put them on so tight they damage the belt. I've done it like that countless times w/o a problem.

Do the bottom cog first as it is the hardest to see. I have an old compact (a girly makeup thingy with a mirror in it) that I stole from my wife that I keep in my tool box just for that lower timing cog. It works great.

And before you ask, no, there isn't any makeup left in it, just the mirror.

how i do eet:

2 large adjustable wrenches (i dont have a size that fits teh cam)

take off your valve covers

see those hexish parts?with the cam mark lined up, put an adjustable wrench on each one so you have some wiggle room each direction.

do the bottom cog first (it is a pain), the tensioner (loosened) then the intake then exhaust cams, and last the idler pulley

with creative wiggling- use the wrenches to loosen up each cam and match up the timing marks on the belt with the cams... once lined up and in place, tighten the cam up (it should match up with the timing mark on the rear cover)

then same thing with the exhaust cam, loosen it up (rotate counterclockwise a bit) , line up the mark on the cog and belt - then tighten it up (clockwise) and go just a bit past the mark on teh rear cover

then slip the belt on the idler pulley, and tighten up the tensioner (not too tight) and torque it down to spec.

that way all the marks line up with each other, and everything should be good

i never understood the counting teeth thing.... teeth on the belt == more , and where do you start counting? is the marked tooth #1, or is it the next one? ...

But, I digress if you know how to do that, it will probably get you to where youre going too

Never done one on my CA yet but alot of the guys on the miata forum Just slide the old belt back enough to pop the new one on and they cut the old one off and slide the new on on the rest of the way. Im not sure if this will work on a CA though. Any input?

the counting is easy!

I think its 32 or 34 cogs between the cam marks, and 48 between the bottam gear and the cam with the cas in it (exuast). and since the marke should be in the 'valley' between the cogs, the number u count is cogs BETWEEN the timeing marks.

I jsut did it the other night, my pulsars getting closer to running!

The question is will it work? Is there enough room to slide the old belt back and get the new one on?

I'm sure it would take a little persuasion, but I think it could be done.

im sure there is enough room, ive done it so many times. i want to go try it! i mean, im not, but you get the idea. worst case scenario you have to put it on the other way.
