Hey guys,

I was tuning a customer's car in which I had installed an SDS system in his 1993 240sx with CA18DET motor and let me tell you all something, that SMIC is crap-olla and if you wind the boost on it and give it a good thrashing for a long time, you're asking for trouble. This customer's Air temperature was moving all over the place and well above 140*F and at the same time his engine temperature stayed at 158*. The car felt good until the intercooler got hot and the fun stopped immediately with alot of pinging and hot air being blown with no performance. So first chance you all get, dump those crappy intercoolers. And for those who think their car is safe with one, I would love to give you a race with one of my sentras for about 5 miles just to watch your engine self destruct:D ! Seriously, those intercoolers are robbing you of good power (trust me).

well what type/brand of intercooler do you reccomend? I was thinking of just using a supra side mount. Would that be sufficient?

I was thinking of going with a starion front mount with the endtanks fabbed for atleast 2" pipes. U guys think that would be enough for about 250 at the crank?

as far as front mounts are concerned, its my personal opinion that the starion fmic is worthless. I used to have a mitsu gsx and i was w/ the whole DSM crowd and i know lots of people who've used them and then thrown them away. If you're gonna get a fmic then go all out and buy a good one. That's just my 2 cents.

I suggest for the 240sx cars to use the big isuzu NPR intercooler! They are very efficient, easy to fit and are not that expensive. Just stay awayf rom those garbage-pail side mount intercooling heatsinks. Which means one should stay away from purchasing front clips with no fenders and headlights and paying extra money just to have to pay more money to get rid of the unused shell of the car that the motor came out of.

The higher boost you run, the hotter the little piss-head intercooler gets and it doesn't cool off fast either.

quite a few 3000+ pound starions have run mid 12s on their stock intercoolers (with the necks opened up), on crappy STOCK throttle body injection. Not bad for a $100 piece imo. If you're not running 12s in your ca18det, point your finger at somethin' else. I doubt that intercooler will be whats holding you back

That's exactly what I ran on a slightly larger turbo and it worked great. The stock endtanks (1.75in) are what kills the starion IC. It's not going to support 300hp, but 250rwhp isn't that bad on a settup like that.

Is the sidemount decent for stock boost? Or would you recomend just upgrading no matter what? Also, is it necessary to have a huge front mount kit type of deal, thats what i have for my sr, but i wanna keep this project lower budget...thanks

Im running stock boost on my CA with a stock SR SMIC. While it does get hot to the touch, the car doesnt detonate.

I still plan to upgrader, regardless wether its stock boost or not ;)

I was thinking of using a skyline GTR front mount but they don't seem popular at all... why is that?they aren't cheap (at around 250 bucks up) but the skyline does make near 280 HP stock, which is right around what I want to run...anyone have any experience?
