MY CA18DET IS MAKING A SPUTTERING SOUND WHEN IT HAS BEEN RUNNING (NOT HARD) FOR ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES. WHEN THE TURBO SPOOLS UP, I CAN'T NOTICE A REAL POWER LOSS, BUT AT LOW-END RPM'S IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE. ANY FEEDBACK WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Does it rev over 3500 rpm? Or does it sound like a WRX all the time? Have you checked your ECU codes yet?

"sounds horrible"

a cough and a fart are two entirely different sounds........ both with different sources and different protential causes........

neither of which are great sounding either

Read the FAQ.

Check the codes in the ecu and the come back with that info. We can go from there.

Pull each coil pack with the car running (one at a time).......and the one pack that gets pulled that doesnt make the car run worse is the one to look at. If pulling each coil makes it runs worse (each of the 4 times)......then its something else.

If you locate which cylinder isnt firing, swap the spark plug from a good cylinder to that bad one and try the test again........if its the same results...you have a bad coil pack and the plugs are fine.

There is a link to download the FSM (Factory Service Manual) in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) sticky at the top of the forum.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD THIS FILE!!!

It has everything you could ever want to know about the CA and how it works.

It also tells you how to read the codes.
