hey guys im new to this so here goes

i recently picked up a 180sx at the auctions with a CA in it. the thing is,,,,,the information plate located in the engine bay says that its a CA18DET,,,,,but! the bloody engine in it now has no turbo??? its got the stock intercooler but no piping no turbo.

im thinking the previous owner might have taken out the turbo and the manifold and replaced it with a ca18de manifold, so the turbo engine is running with no turbo???? (i could be wrong) lol.

the other thing could be that the previous owner took out the ca18det engine and replaced it with a CA18DE engine without changing the information.

is there anyway to tell if its a CA18DET or a CA18DE??????? help please!!!!!!

what color are the plastic parts of the injectors? Red=260 and CA18DEWhite=370 and CA18DETIf you can get a good angle down the spark plug hole to shine a light and peek you should be able to see if the pistons are domed with the piston at the bottom of the stroke. Domed = CA18DEDished = CA18DET

Those are two of the ways that don't require you to tear the motor open. If you would rather do that, piston oilers screwed into the block aiming up at the bottom of the pistons are for sure turbo gear.

You could look for a big *** aluminum dropping resistor near the air filter for the low impedance turbo injectors. Also there could be a boost control solenoid on the passenger side strut tower. You could look for signs of the turbo's oiling system as well, namely a conspicuously new pipe plug screwed in the passenger side of the block around the second cylinder and the drainpipe sticking out of the oil pan which would need to be capped.

Just check the compression, it will instantly tell you what slugs are in those bores and you can go from there. In any case, a conversion can be done if it's a DE and gives you a chance to refreshen the internals for peace of mind.

Either way it needs to be pulled and freshened up. You will know for sure what it is then. Did the rwd ca18de's come with oil squirters or was that a turbo only thing? I know none of the fwd de's came with them, but this is the US and we continually get the shaft from jap car manufacturers.

squirters are over rated. Just run a lil richer and/or get forged pistons!

9:1 or higher.... its the way to be!
