you check for codes on the ecu itself. i dont need to get into the whole process, you can find it all wicked easy.

And dont get too confused, i just call it the saftey loop. limp home mode is probably more appropriate.

I agree with Liquid Neonits seems like you Maf is fubarddownload a FSM. It tells you how to check for codes. It also, tells you how to test your Maf

Sounds to me like the engine isnt properly grounded. run a few larger sized 10-4 gauge from the chassis to the engine, bolt them down possibly on the back of the cylinder head.

also the hoses on the valve cover:

the driver side one usually goes to the inlet tube on the turbo. and the one on the passenger side(closest to the intake) goes to the back of the intake manifold youll see the PCV valve sticking out. it doesnt look like a regular vacuum port.

some things that might help is searching ebay for ca18det 's and look at there engines to see where everything goes if they have clear enough pics.

also like these guys said, make sure you dont have a vacuum leak. how does the car idle? do you have a vacuum gauge? how much vacuum is it reading at idle?

See the stickies. All of that stuff is for the butterfly valves in the lower intake mani. You don't need them working for the car to run properly. I generally tell people to not worry about them until you get the car running well, and then if you want to try and hook them up after that, it's OK.

How do you have them hooked up? There are a couple of different diagrams in the stickies refering to Vac line routing.

Check out page EF & EC 68. it tells you what the numbers correlate to

12- something is wrong with your MAF 13- your Engine Temp sensor could be bad 34- your knock sensor is bad or your wiring could be bad

and before you say how do i check them. check page EF & EC 32 to see what pages these items are located.
