Hello,

I did a little research in the forums but with no answers to my questions.

We are currently working on a 1995 240SX with a KA-T in it that has engine/cooling problems. The poor KA was boosted on 9 pounds for 3 years and finally had enough. Rings in front cylinder are shot(90-100 psi in #1 cylinder). Plus, there is a coolant leak into the engine. Cracked block/sleeve?

I have found somewhat locally a full CA18DET swap and I am considering advising the customer to purchase it but I want to make sure it will bolt into the car without a whole lot of modifications.

The car is currently an automatic car and he was wanting to convert it over to 5-speed as well. Which means I will have to source the clutch pedal, master cylinder and slave cylinder for the clutch to work obviously.

I know that the CA18DET motor is from an older Silvia, so that is why I'm asking this question.

Mods on the car are as follows:

60 Trim T3/T4 hybrid turbo (new)SS Autochrome manifold (top mount)Full custom 3" downpipe and exhaustRising rate fuel pressure regulator(unsure of brand)Stock fuel pump?!? Not sure what is in there now....

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

at a minimum he is going to want to rebuild the CA before installing it.

wiring isnt horrible, little different. there are a couple on here.

you could easily run the T3/T4 with a new TM manifold for CA and an external w/g(likely with his KA he already has one).

the worst part will be a DP(if you use the T3/T4).

getting a working stock component if it isnt already there(good ECU,CAS, and MAF)

making a proper harness

that being said, it isnt hard, but neither is sourcing a $200 KA24DE and rebuilding it for alot more boost for what you will spend on the CA w/o a rebuild(usually).

I doubt he cracked the block. KA's are infamous for warping the head and block when they overheat. You only have to do it once and they warp. That is also the source of your coolant leak. The head gasket is no longer sealing.

Honestly, it will actually be less work to pull the KA, rebuild it, and put it back in, than it will be to convert it over to a CA.

Chances are the CA will need rebuilt too. They tend to get beat on.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

I see what your saying, but since the block will have to be decked to solve the warped issue, and it will have to be bored and new rings, bearings, etc...you get into alot of money to rebuild the KA24DE.

The CA18DET I found is only 1,800 dollars, and that includes the stock turbo with a nice stainless steel manifold and an Enjuku Racing 3" downpipe. All of the gaskets and seals have been replaced including the head and the compression numbers and leak down tests are perfect. It's also already been cleaned up so it's ready to go in the car (comes with everything, including driveshaft-which from what I've read can be a b**** to source).

There is a donor car that is a 5 speed locally that I can get the clutch pedal setup from and the master/slave cylinders from to make the clutch stuff work. I know that the wiring will be an issue, but hopefully not that horrible.

I just hope that the CA at 12 psi and a manual trans will pull the same as the KA24 did with the super 60 at 9 psi.

Car also has a 29" x 9" FMIC with a Greddy Type S BOV recirc'd back into the turbo inlet(forgot to include that in the first post)...lol.

Keep the advice coming!

If the CA is in good shape, then this is a little better, but good luck with the wiring. There is no info at all for a CA into an S14. There is some (very little) info on an S13 SR into an S14. You'll have to follow that, and also run extra wires for the knock sensor, and the butterfly control system.

The stock CA turbo is a hair drier. That KA w/a super 60 is still making way more power at 9psi than the CA will with the stock turbo at 12psi.

Get an SR T25 and you'll be in a little better shape. At least that turbo will clear 200whp.
