The general idea behind intercooler piping is this.
The hot pipe should stay the size of the compressor outlet until it reaches the intercooler. Then it should match that(as close to the intercooler as possible)
Then the cold pipe should immediately transition from the intercooler outlet size, into the size of the throttlebody.
basically, it's all about velocities.
By keeping the hot pipe small, there is very little velocity loss. Once it goes into the intercooler, it needs to fill up that space, and then come back again into a small space(the intercooler outlet). So when it leaves, it's better to have a larger cold pipe so the air isn't forced into too small a pipe, creating lots of resistance.
That's the basic principle behind it anyway.
