FIRST OFF
my setup is a
ca18det in a 97 nissan hardbody
stock turbo running stock boost.
Walbro hp fuel pump
safc

My motor is in need of so much needed attention. However i leave for the airforce basic training in like 3 weeks so not much time to get much done.

Ok guys i have already searched and read up on this problem but i have a few questions.

Ok whats going on is this:

My ca18det has trouble starting most of the time. like it will crank but it will sputter for like a second then shut off. then once it does actually start it sputters and the exhaust just smells awful. It doesn't pick up idle until after i pat the gas. Btw while its sputtering and sounding like s*** the belts also sequel for a few seconds.

Normally once it warms up it idles fine and runs like normal. However here lately it wont idle at all. Instead it just drops idle bounces back and forth between 400-800 rpms. then it will just shut off.

Last night when i was on my way home from work i was just driving along going up a SLIGHT hill when it suddenly my truck started sputtering and then it cut off. WHILE DRIVING. I pulled over and turned my truck back on. it started like normal but then it cut off again when I pulled into my yard and let it idle for a few seconds.

I have read that it is mostly a dirty iacv or bad air regulator possibly even a vacuum leak.. my question is could it be my timing thats off? also where is the iacv located and is it hard to locate and remove?

where can i purchase a new air regulator?

my ecu is throwing the code for a problem with my crank angle sensor.
is there anywhere i can purchase on of these new?

GUYS I APPRECIATE ANY HELP THAT CAN BE GIVEN!

Your ecu is throwing the code because you're probably having a problem with either your CAS, the exhaust cam key that works with the CAS or the circuitry to the CAS is flawed. That IACV thing isn't shutting off your vehicle. It will give you a hard time starting it sometimes screw with your driveability a tad bit, but not shut your engine down. You need to focus on the area the computer's telling you to.

Dee is right. If you're throwing a code for the CAS, you need to address that issue first. As he mentioned, the CA has a known problem with the keyway in the exhaust cam either breaking off/spinning in the cam/stripping out and causing problems. I would remove the CAS and inspect the keyway (both on the cam and on the CAS). If it appears to be in good condition, then you need to replace the CAS. I don't want to say they're failure prone, but they're known for failing too, and can cause all of the problems that you've having as well. You can purchase them new from the parts store. Tell them you have a 1988 Nissan Pulsar NX SE DOHC.
