Hey everyone, just picked a '93 240 S13 w/ a CA18DET in it. From what I was told it's pretty much bone stock. The only visible mod is a short ram intake. Here's my problem:

The car idles at 1100 rpms when cold, idles at 2000 rpms at operating temperature. It runs very rich. It likes to stutter badly below 3000 rpms. In reverse, to get out of a parking stall, it typically dies 2-3 times before I can get into 1st gear to pull away.

I pulled the spark plugs out last night to replace them. The 2 sparkplugs nearest the firewall smelled strongly of gasoline.

I have asked 2 ASE certified techs, and a few other people... the popular response has been maybe I have an injector or 2 that is stuck open. The theory is the engine idles so high, to burn the fuel thats being dumped in by the injector. It stutters at low rpms, because its "drowning" in a sense....

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I traded a swapped '94 Integra that ran perfectly for this 240, it's kind depressing it doesnt run very well. lol. Grr. Thanks for your help guys.

p.s. Im currently stationed in Point Loma, 5 minutes from the San Diego airport. If anyone's close by, let me know

Welcome to NICO?Welcome to the ruthless life of owning a CA, it will piss you off yet make you happy beyond measure, by the smell of things it has already started the former

Do you have some sort of tuning method.I would say try using a SAFC and lean it out towards the low end and see if it runs better.

If its the injectors that are effed up, just replace them. The CA can take a bunch of different injectors so replacing shouldnt be too expensive.

few thoughts........ as your discription doesnt offer much.

recoil spring in the TB is not recoiling all the way......... thus dumping fuel and producing a rough idle.

likely a buttery fly maybe stuck open.

a very likely issue could be a vac leak........ though the shuttering under 3k sounds more like a COP that is toast.

there are other ideas......... maf issues, and yeah an injector could be stuck open, but Im pretty sure it wouldnt idle up........ it would simply be pig rich.

ps might want to check where you set screw on the AAC is set.

the FSM is in the stickies as well as how to set the Set scew on the AAC and just about anything else you could need to know.

thank you for the ideas. sorry the description was a little rough. lol. after a more thorough inspection yesterday, i noticed my stock bov is full of oil, and my turbo looks like its on its last legs. so, ill probably be buying a bunch of parts to start rebuilding this thing in the near future =)

The CA doesn't have a stock BOV... recirc or otherwise.

Do you mean the exhaust housing and wastegate?

ok, im going by what 2 other guys referred to as a recirc valve. its located on the fender well wall, driver side, right near the side mount... maybe the other guy that had it put it in? ill post pics tomorrow. i pulled the driveline tonight, and ill be pulling the transmission tomorrow to replace the throw out bearing and to pinpoint my leak.
