To all owners of the awesome CA18DET motor,

It has been apparent that many CA18DET owners think they have a motor that can rev to 8000+rpm without dramas. Although the CA18DET can rev better than the SR20DET and the KA24DE, it makes no power in the 8-9k rpm range, unless you have the necessary cams, solid lifters, and valve springs as well as the fuel system to support it. And though the oil pumps are pretty durable, they do fail from neglect as many of you have already experienced.

Spare your engines the grief and stop trying to pull Vtec type revving because they eventually wear out as well. Consistently revving on a used motor will almost always result in rod bearing wear which ultimately results in costly repairs. I hope this shed some light on people that want the CA18 because they've heard it could rev to some insane rpm in stock form. It will let you do it, but you wil wear out your motor in a nasty way.

That can pretty much be said about any old motor, a car will last as long as owner is on top of maint. I keep seeing alot of people on here having problems, experimenting with this motor. I always thinks it better to leave well enough alone. My car is running fine, only problems I've encountered is with the idle, too low and stalls out when coming to a stop but starts back up. I'm now focusing on redoing the interior and cosmetics. Screw the racing, this motor is fine enough at 8psi.

Vtec limits revability due to rockers, the reason B16s can rev to 8100 and f20cs to like 11k without excessive wear has nothing to do with Vtec, valvle float is prevented with stiff enough springs/ light enough lifter assemblies, and excessive pistonspeeds and sideloading is prevented by a proper R/S ratio

Sorry, I know this is way off topic but I couldn't find any better way to get hold of you [boost boy] as emails and pm's to you are disabled.

I read that you have a 73mm throttle body on your ca18det. What is the TB originally off? Was it a straight swap or was modification needed?

Thanks

Not recommended for stock-based CA18DET as it has no water inlet/return lines and you have to use Ford TPS. Mine is off one my old SHO T-bodies that I had left over.
