Today I went to the dyno to do some baseline tuning and to see where the car was at as far as the air/fuel ratio was concerned and boy did I look stupid. Remember how I bragged about how I haven't changed the spark plugs in 2 years. well it cam eback to haunt me today. I always wondered why the car would throw a trail of funny looking smoke when I got on into good boost, but never really worried about it too much to the point whereas I needed to tune the car up. Well, my 1st pull at 15psi netted 294whp and I think around 241lb/ft of tq. Not bad, right? So I did 2 more pulls without screwing with parameters and netted about the same thing. Running a bit rich in the upper RPM band, I removed about 3% from 4500rpm to 9750rpm and the car stayed the same. A/F ratio got a tad bit better, but still not over 300@15psi.

To make this story a bit shorter, on my 12th pull I adjusted the rpm timing some 2 degrees in the engines sweet area (5000rpm to 7500rpm) and netted 306.6whp@15psi. Still pretty upset because I know the car can do better, I cranked the boost up to 18psi and netted 286whp (lost power); so I'm like:confused: and still wondering why my exhaust smell so funny. Well, comes to find out that those 2 year old spark plugs could not burn the fuel properly and the owner of the dyno was like:tisk: and I was like I'm such a lazy ***. So it was estimated that there was about 15-20hp being lost because of poor ignition. So bottom line is, don't be lazy and tune your car on time. I suck:rant and I know better, too.

BWT, it was done on 93 octane and did not rev past 7500rpm. Not bad for 3y/o well abused CA!;)

Quote »So, did ya change the plugs yet?
Nope. I'm going to put the iridium plugs in. I mean after 2 years of abuse, I'm curious to see what's left of those plugs. And besides the fact that it's raining here. Quote »and i hope you're going back for some more runs.
Possibly tomorrow! They got a dyno shoot-out going on. Quote »what did you get charged to use the dyno?
$80 bucks for an hour and a half. Got a chance to see everything. All pulls were done in 3rd gear. The dynomometer shows 103mph in 3rd gear@7300rpm, so that might be the correcting factor for the speedometer or I just saw the rpm wrong. but I swear my car can do better than 120mph in 3rd gear. The car was pumping out 90.5whp and 112 ft/lb of torque @ 60mph and 4300rpm with A/F ration in the low 12s from 5800rpm on out to 7300rpm where I let go the throttle.

Oh yeah, didn't even spit-up enough oil to sneeze at. That's the tell-tell sign if you got a good or bad set of rings. And I would like to add that this thing does have A/C and P/S and is now twirling a helical LSD; and for those who don't know the difference, they both turn in the same direction and the both tires light-up evenly when you hit the throttle hard. It's been deemed as the ultimate sleeper;) .

Very nice! I wish i could find a dyno around here so i can see how much power my tired E16 doesn't have, it's puffing out smoke between shifts. I can't wait til I get my crap together, it's gonna be awesome, no more 70 horses at the flywheel for me! And yeah, it's the ultimate sleeper!

I'm aiming to have the sentra finished by next year, still need to find a pulsar for parts and get everything neccesary for some nice boost, then get the sentra stripped down and rebuild the whole car.

hmmmm...when i dynoed mine it left a cloud of smoke and turned the floor of the shop black every run. and im sticking with me needing to replace stuff left and right. that car just doesnt run like i know it can. anyway, 307whp is NOTHING to be ashamed of in a 2100lb car.

Quote »Fully functional rings must be nice...
Yours was beat down before you got your engine. I seriously don't think most here have done some of the foolish/intense highspeed racing I'm accustomed to be because of the "balls" theory. You have to have a pretty solid pair of gonads to hold your pedal down in 5th gear and let the car go as fast as it possibly can. I'm probably going to do the dyno thing again today, but will only be for power. I'll change the sparkies and do a few other things like throw some racing gas in there. It's raining, so I may just load the car up with race gas and save it for the track on the 22nd of february.

Dyno #s are good for letting you know the full capability of your car/motor in a controlled environment. Most people tune their cars to get maximum power, only to have to have to set everything back for everyday driving. You even have your dyno queens, that have the really stupid-sized turbochargers that will never be used on a street or even a strip.

But we are into durability and performance around here, not max power on the dyno. Over 30 dyno pulls on this engine and it's still going. Says alot about our beloved CA; even the dyno owner was impressed.

Like I said, this motor cost $500 and I'm just amazed how it's holding up. And that carp about CA18DET gaskets letting go after 15psi is pure myth. If you're running your engine lean, you will burn the gaskets fire ring and will ultimately cause the gasket to let go.

let me know how much of a difference it makes. im really anxious to hear. it may help me out because i had some burnt up motorcraft (ford) plugs in mine when i put it on the dyno. when i say burnt up, i mean those plugs did not like direct coil ignition, the ceramic part that pokes out of the engine turned dark brown and the damn things just looked owned.

Dee - I hear ya on the speed thing. I love to go fast. I hate the limiter on mine. Once you see 120mph, you want 130, then 140, ect. Too much more of this and I'll have to get a bike!

Tim - It sounds like you need a colder range plug....

Hey Dee, sorry man, but I had to have Aaron call you out on the Gonad Theory for me. Why don't you do me a favor, prove me wrong, buy using Aaron's body as a human spoiler by ductaping him to the bumper. Until then, you have mushy balls.

that is awesome. i want my car to do that. it really dislikes multiple people in it, or a full tank of gas.
