Found this interesting and decided to share.

Turns out Jim wolf tech makes replacement CAS drivepins that I found very similar to the ca18 version, so I emailed them and got this reply.

Hi Alvin,
Yes, our JWT CAS Pin for the VG30DE-TT also fits the CA18DE and CA18DE-T engines. This part is in inventory and ready to ship and the price is $32.00 plus shipping.

I dont know how common wear is on that part (please give me insight on this), but I have heard of it happening and it is much cheaper than buying a whole new cam if it does fail.

Another question.. Would a VG30DE cas work with a CA18 if one were to replace the vg30s photo disc out with a ca18 one?

VG CAS on CA won't work, while they function on the same principle (1 signal in 360deg timing increments and another per cylinder position) the CAS on a 6 cylinder will have 6 cylinder sync timing outputs per revolution while the CA will be 4.

Yes you are right, but that is what I was trying to overcome by switching the vg30s rotor plate/photo disc with the ca18s rotor plate. Are the timing outputs solely controlled by the holes in the rotor plate or is there already timing outputs programed in the LED and wave forming circuit?

Ah, I missed that. The plates should be the main differentiator, though I don't know for sure that the VG will/won't bolt onto the CA otherwise. I recall someone trying to take one apart and either failing or destroying it in the process, but if you can swap the plates that should take care of it, assuming they're otherwise identical internally.

I have 2 faulty ca18 CASs'. Going to search local junkyards for some vg30de cam angle sensors to experiment with soon.

They are not that simple to take apart, so exercise extreme caution. I would suggest just buying more used ones instead of wasting time experimenting. I'm pretty sure you can find them under $100 to save you some time.

Yeah I already have a few good ca cam sensors (not gonna mess with those). Just doing this for fun. vgde cam sensors are more common and only 10 bucks from the local junk yard

They don't usually wear on the CA, but the alignment key often breaks offs, although it seems that is usually associated with using a modified upper timing cover that has been cut back to expose the timing gear. If the stock cover is retained, or a quality CAS mount is used, it doesn't seem to be an issue.

As for the CAS, in concept, the rotorplate should be the only difference, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mounting points and shaft are different as well.

yeah turns out vgde CASs are more popular than i thought in my local U-PULL, they disappear quickly.... so this is on hold till one pops up XD.
