I'm working on a story for SCC and would like to pick your collective brain. This won't hurt a bit. Just a few questions to get the flame war started.

1: How many of you have CA18DETs up and running? What state of modification are they in, how much power, etc?

2: Is there any one person/shop considered the CA guru, or is it still largely a mystery engine?

3: What's the going rate for a CA front clip these days?

Thanks for the info.

1. can't help you there.

2. I wouldn't say its a mystery engine, in fact no where close to it. But then again what do you mean by mystery?

I'll have one running as soon as i find a place to swap at:D Its stock with an sr t25 and starion fmic for now! BOV and boost controller next round of mods...

and talk to Paul (MovingViolation240) on NICO...he's moved on to SR's but I for one regard him as the US CA18DET guru...TheMadScientist is defn. the Japan CA guru:D

clips run in the $1700 range I'd assume...I pieced my stuff together with help from TheMadSci in japan so I'm still under the $1k mark...mwhahaha!

Email me if you have any questions I'd love to help out: [email protected]

NO!!! Do not do a story on the CA! I don't want everyone and their mom finding out what we already know (that despite its size handicap, the CA is a beast) But you probably won't listen to me so:

1) The majority of the people in this forum do not have running CA's. Personally mine is sitting here waiting for my nismo motor mounts and then it'll be in and hopefully running. I know boost boy has had success with multiple CA's i believe and movingviolation240 had a CA with around 400hp?? and i also recall him saying he shifted that motor at 9,000 rpms all day long and never had a problem.

2) There really is no shop that specializes in CA swaps. It is basically just us guys that share info and parts with eachother as needed and for me that is one of the best parts.

3) I recently purchased my CA clip from venus auto for $1500. Afterdark tuning sells complete motors for $1750 and i belive unstable hybrids sells clips for either $1700 or $1800

Once again, if you really are Dave and not just someone having some fun using his name. Please do not write an article on our beloved engine. I don't want to hear rice boys talking about getting CA's and then have them buying up all the good 240's and putting GTR badges all over them.

Yes, please don't run a story on the CA. Its bad enough I have to hear every civic owner talking about their "SR20 240 project" I don't want to hear the CA18 in there as well. This motor is more of a cult motor and doesn't deserve to be whored out through a magazine article.

On a side note, if you are who you say you are, find out why they ruined "project silvia". I say ruined because it came off as a budget project in the first article, and now it has all these crazy high-end parts on it. I think your mag needs some more grassroots articles in it like ones where johnny mechanic slaves away with some steel and a TIG welder fabbing up his own exhaust and IC piping and such. Those are the articles I like. Damn, I can count over 15 different items I picked up at Home Depot I used in the engine bay.

Do another story on a stock Supra with a huge wing and blingin' rims: that seems to hold the interest of most extremely well. :)

Sh1t, almost forgot the standard huge tach on the dash. ;)

yea dont do it please. or at least wait till I get mine. last time you guys did that with the SR20 demand went through the roof and prices swiftly followed. heres a better article: all the cool things you can do with a AW11 MR2. the supercharged engine or the 20 valve or turbo the supercharged engine or turbo the 20 valve or something. ororor OR maybe fiddle with the mark 3 supra, 1JZ, 2JZ eh? eh? okok then, uh.. OH make a 260ZR! a rear wheel drive RB26DETT into a Z31 300z! thatll make a hell of a showstopper! ok not buying that either, hmm OH, yeah! put a Altezza transmission and driveline(6sp yea!) with a turbo SW20 motor into a AE86! or a second or third gen supra! leave our poor little underground motor underground! please! There really arent enough clips to go around. they havent made the motor in nearly ten years and only had it for 3 or so years in the JDM its too late to start a mass media trend over it.

I'm sooo proud of everyone here coming together to make Dave's idea of CA article go out the window :) See, we stick up for our engine...outsiders would treat it like crap. Anyways, you should be spending more time covering some One Lap of America stuff or do a tech article on some suspension stuff, how bout...camber curves!

1. only one of us(and he cant get it runnin right)

2. nobody. nobody knows ish about this motor/swap

3. the going rate is 4000+ for a clip now-a-days.

if you publish an article about the ca, i will cancel my subscription immediatly. scc has ruined too many of our projects in the past by getting all the rice boys to jump on our bandwagon. please save sumpin for the lil man. I LIKE BEIN THE UNDERDOGG!!!

You guys do know there have been some ca powered cars in scc before right? There was that silver one with the titanium exhaust manifold and stuff (with the blue engine cover) that was pretty sick...but you don't see people rushing out to buy CA's because of it...

And I doubt they would do two project silvias back to back with different engines. And if it is really the guy from scc he's probably just looking for info to do a comparison of a CA car vs. their car, and not an actual full write up...

Yeah, it is mysterious! When people asks "what type of engine is that", I just smile and shake my head in disgust. Even most of the saltier toyota 3tc lovers have not a clue about this engine and even to the ones that did know of it's existence says the CA has soft bottom and I just agree with them:rolleyes . Anyways, we CA lovers are of a cult that kinda enjoy our stealthy lifestyle in the performance ring. We are exotic and mysterious, but I do have a FWD sentra that will pounce over a Z06 vette or most front and RWD cars out there on the road today even wasting a turbocharged IS300 with 2J motor and nearly 500hp to the crank on the top end! Not to sound rude, but we can still buy our engines pretty cheap because they are old and beat-up and crap for performance compared to the SR20, so just forget about a story on the "CA18" because they are not worthy of such exposure;) .

I don't think that this guy is for real. He had yet to reply to any of our comments. But like the rest of them, DON'T DO AN ARTICLE ON OUR MOTOR!!! Listen to all of the valid points posted ahead of me and take them to heart. And if you do make an article, let me know first. I was going to wait till I had the money for a CA, but if there is going to be a cheezy riceboy article in SCC then I'll buy it now and put it on a credit card before prices skyrocket. Just leave us alone. We're different, and if you provoke us, we WILL bite.

PS-Boostboy- I like that, "The CA has a week bottom" comment. riiiiiiiiight.

He posted on FreshAlloy a couple weeks ago in the 240SX basic forum with a question about adjustable sways. His IP address resolved to mcmullenargus.com (SCC publisher), so it was definitely him on there. He waited a while to reply on there too, so chances are it really is him here. I guess he wants to hit all the top 240 forums for research on SCC's next bandwagon article. :rolleyes Look on the bright side tho, at least it's not Import Tuner...

If I had to guess what he's doing, he's researching all the engines that people put in 240s to make an article on that...he's posted here in the ca forums, the sr forums and the turbo ka forums...

He's got a post in the RB forums too. I think he should do an article that slams the CA sooo horribly and puts it as the worst engine ever to use for a 240. Then i would be happy. If he's not going to do this then i think we should ban him!! :)

Yeah, I like SCC all right, but please...trash on the CA in the article, its really a crappy engine, it doesnt rev worth anything, it has a weak bottom end, and the size of it is a HUGE hindrance to making any real power. All in all it's a crappy engine, I only have one because it was so cheap. Nobody like's CA's we just have them because we cant afford the SR, which is a MUCH better engine in EVERY way. Especially the valvetrain, the SR has a phenomenal valvetrain. Let me reiterate this: the CA sucks, please write an article saying so :)

Oh GOD.... I remember back when we had the forums on 240sx.org and as soon as the SR SCC issue came out it seemed like everyone and there mom was signing up on the board... I'd never seen so many new members just about all of them saying "yea i just sold my civic and got a 240, im puttin a silvia motor in it" oooh man, its like a living nightmare hearing all them ricers still talkin about why didnt I get an SR..... please dont make this motor available in the public eye!
