Hello I'm new here, I have a 1989 Nissan Sunny Rz-1 with the ca16de engine. I'm planing on rebuilding the engine and I want to turbo it :) . I wanted to know if the rb20det pistons would work on the ca16de as in line up with the ca16/18 rods and if there would be valve clearance? The rb20det and the ca16de both have a bore of 78.0mm. I don't think the ca18det pistons would work because they're 5mm bigger than the ca16 ones.

Hard to answer that as no one really uses the CA16DE that much. Hopefully the info provided will help you make the appropriate decision as to where you're trying to go or what you're trying to do. Good luck

Compression Ratio 8.5:1
Max. Power; kW/bhp 160/214 @ 6400 rpm
Max. Torque; Nm/ft-lbs 263/194 @ 3200 rpm
Bore x Stroke; mm 78.0mm x 69.7mm
Redline 7600 rpm
Fuel Injection Nissan EGI (ECCS)

CA16DE specs:

■Displacement: 1.6L, (1598cc)
■Fuel system type: Multi-port Fuel Injection
■Net Horsepower: 113HP @ 6500RPM
■Net Torque: 98 ft. lbs. @ 4800RPM

I don't know anything about RB pistons, but I can tell you the main issues to be concerned with are diameter (which it seems like you already know is the same), placement of the valve reliefs, clearance for the oil squirters and compression height. Compression height is the distance from the center of the wrist pin to the top of the piston (if it's a flat top, which it should be). If you can find all of that info, you should be able to compare those numbers and see if it will work.

I might have my RB20 service manuals at the house. If I do I can give you the compression height and pin size. The valve releifs and squirter cutouts I don't have much info on. I can confirm that RB20DETs do have squirters and I think it reasonable to expect they are in the same basic area as the CA18DET, but I don't think the CA18DE has any squirters anyway. The CA18DE doesn't so why would the 16? If I can find those books I should be able to provide connecting rod lengths and big and little end bore sizes.

Thanks for the info guys. The ca16 doesn't have oil squirters. If the rb20det pistons don't work I can make a special order for forged pistons, but using the rb20det pistons would be cheaper option.
