Alright I have used the search button and google as well and cant find anything about the ca16 cams, are they an upgrade for our CA's, and is it a simple bolt-in part?

It's a myth.

Its not a myth they work great simple bolt on mod

You could just use the std exhaust cam and use a veinier pully and set to 19 degrees ie 1 tooth retarded is 15 degrees so another 1/4-1/3 of a tooth is about right

i currently use the exhaust cam on the inlet side on my daily driver set as above with a stage 2 hd chip with a T25g jap 180sx turbo and made 261bhp thats only 10-15 or so down on the t28 boys with std cams but quicker spool by about 400-450 rpm

on my race setup new cams are needed i think too with std cams 347whp with hks 3037s at 1.6 bar dropping of at 6800rpm so the exhaust cam mod is going in there soon with uprated springs should see me with a tad more boost to 400whp

Option magazine refuted the claim and my FSM says they are the same grind. Myth

Well TMS is pretty trustworthy, so I'm sticking with him sorry unless you have dyno sheets and OEM specs...

Oh Well the std Ca16de has a duration of 248 with a lift of 8.5 and the std inlet on the caa8det had a 240 with 7.8 lift so you can work out your own calcuations for this one as i said ive use the exhaust cam on the inlet to the same spec as the exhaust is a 248 duration cam and it works!!

The lift and duration specs are the same. There is only one possibility that would contribute to a power change, lobe profile. Two cams can have the same duration=period the valve is off it's seat and lift= how far off the seat it is lifted, but have a different profile. If the CA16 cam's ramps lift the valves quicker to the same lift and spend more time open more that the CA18 cam within the full advertised duration then that could improve power. Without hard evidence to prove that is the case though it is just speculation and I cannot in good concience recommend it.

exhuast cam on the intake side is a different animal. That definately works. I can tell you it also yeilds good results on an RB. I broke my CAS drive in the RB20 cam and stuck it on the itake, definate difference!

Ok we shall agree to disagree on the ca16de cam but if you check out another forum that i normaly use that wont disclose in this thread incase of any matter that i shouldn't for what ever reason they have used them and found in many cases to be viable

at least we agree on the exhaust cam mod but how when ive set to ca16 spec ?? with ver pully

its all about cam timing... centre lobe angles.

lift/durations are the same

there are lengthy discussions on the topic.

There seem to be variations with the CA16/18 series cams... even between the japanese and euro CA18dets. Perhaps why the discrepancy.

Verify that your motor has a 240 degree/lower lift intake cam, and you're replacing it with the 248 degree/higher lift.Valve timing differs for the more common 248 exhaust cam, so that must be taken into consideration, if you go that route.Increased intake duration/lift has repeatedly awarded measurable improvements. Don't need a magazine to tell ya that.

Lots of actual testimonials consistent with gains mentioned above. Some clever enthusiasts have measured, degree'd, install the inlet cam, drove AND dyno'd their setups.

I swapped them out, but I got the ca16 cams free. Its not worth it really. if you do anything, swap another exhaust cam to the intake side.

Exhaust cam from the CA18 right? How much low end are you going to lose? Noticable?

I've had both intake cams on my hand at the same time (JDM CA16DE VS EDM CA18DET), and the CA16 certainly has more lift (8,5) I couldn't measure the duration though. As the cam was free to take, I installed it. I don't have a pre/post dyno comparison as other things were done to the engine at the same time.

can't speak to euro cams but what I posted is the lift specs for both cams direct from the FSM.

Maybe JDM CA18DET have different intake cams than EDM, but I don't think so, as both JDM and EDM cams have the same part number (for S13 at least): 13020-35F00

Here is the EDM FSM

EDIT: searching in FAST, it seems that both JDM and EDM RWD CA18DET have the same intake cam, but FWD CA1XD and U12 CA18DET AT have another cam (P/N 13020-55M00), and all other FWD CA18DET have yet another cam (P/N 13020-D4202).

Is anyone rocking, dual exhaust cams?

I have an extra set laying around. Are they pointless with out adjustable cam gears?

Well, you can just advance the stock gear by one tooth on the belt. its essentially the same. You really should use adj. gears, but you'll probably be alright just advancing it a tooth.

i have to ask what fsm is that exactly? its not the s13 as it clearly has both 18de/det intakes at 7.8s

It's the manual for the CA16DE engine. I have the CA18DE(T) manual and the S13 manual as well.

Yup. Neat ain't it?What specs you need? All it has is lift and duration for the cams.I'll post the CA18 manual and S13 manual when me gets home.

alright here are the three FSMs I have with CA info, CA16DE, CA18DET and S13 manuals respectively.

Here are the pages with cam info, S13 manual left, CA16 manual top right and CA18 manual lower right.

I have quick question about cams if ya'll don't mind helping me. I had my CAS out and I noticed that the little metal dowel that sticks out to help you align it was missing.

This is a real pain in the butt to get the CAS back in where it should be without that alignment dowel.

I have a ca18de sitting outside and I was curious if I could use the cam out of it so I would have that alignment dowel back in place. So two quick questions:

#1 Which cam is the one that the CAS goes onto?

#2 Can I put the ca18de cam in it's place w/o adjustable cam gear?

The exhuast cam drives the CAS and the DE cam is shorter duration; better to get a new DET cam or carefully line up the CAS on the busted one. It's the star shaped part that carries the load, the half-cut section is the make it one-way install. Yours has been "distressed" but if the star is still there you can use it, just carefully line it up and install the CAS.

Easier said than done, remember my engine is sideways and I can't even see into the hole to align it up. I used a mirror yesterday and tried for about an hour with no luck heh.

i put a full de head on my ca18det...would i get better results by swapping in my det exhaust cams? and will advancing the intake cam really increase power/torque
