ok i did a swap about 3 days ago, everything was fine a dandy drove it for 3 days and whatnot then i changed the spark plugs.put the spark plugs in, it runs, did a testdrive, OK, nothing unusual. then next morning i started the car, rough start, it cranks but dies off after like 5 sec. also, smoke shoots out around the exhaust manifold area. all i did was change the spark plugs, PCV, oil and filter. thats it, motor was running like a champ before that. any idea what could be the problem? please help.thank you

from the exhaust manifold area? sounds like something's not quite all the way on, but that alone wouldn't kill it..

check the fluid levels and check the spark plugs make sure they all look ok, make sure the PCV works, since those are all things you changed.

what color smoke?

i would def. check the manifold gaskets and whatnot. make sure the plugs look okay/are gapped correctly, etc. and check all the fluids and stuff. the color of the smoke would help too, like biosehnsucht said. mine did the same thing after i overheated the crap out of it, i even had the smoke! (but that was coming from the block itself, oops!)

good luck on that problem, i dont think it can be too serious. give us some updates or more info and we will be glad to help (right guys?!!).

ok. i changed the plugs yesterday (keep in mind i just changed the plugs 2 days ago) i pulled out the 2 day old plugs theyre already black as all hell. i then went ahead and start the car. it starts with some hesitation (had to rev the engine to "catch its breath", so to speak), but it started.. test drove it, fine nothing unusual.

then today this morning, tried to start the car, it cranks, it starts but it dies off.. AGAIN! what the hell, i just pulled out the plugs right now (plugs from yesterday) and theyre black already.

maybe im using the wrong plugs? i really dont know..according to the crossover sticky post:

Spark Plugs 1984 CA18ET* 200sx NGK PFR6A-11 $Varies

but when i did a search on ngksparkplugs.com:

1984 NISSAN 200SX 1.8 L4 CA18ET EFI EXHAUST

Spark Plug Part No. Stock No. Plug Gap Photo Standard BCPR5ES-11 # 6696 .044

thats what it gave me. but, when i did this:

1988 NISSAN PULSAR NX SE 1.8 L4 CA18DE EFI DOHC

Spark Plug Part No. Stock No. Plug Gap Photo Laser Platinum PFR6A-11 * # 4045 .044

which one should i use? the CA18ET (P# BCPR5ES-11) or the CA18DE (P# PFR6A-11) seems like the car is running extermely rich.. this is really getting frustrating.. please shed some light guys...

hmm. check the voltage to the o2 sensor and the cold start stuff. i would also check your ecu for codes and inspect your fuel system (what do the injectors look like?, do you have any way of tuning the fuel system?). i dont think you would be having a problem with the plugs, i have used both and i didnt notice a difference.

Sounds like your running rich as a beeyotch. Could be a MAF Problem, if you have another maf around try that. These Nissan MAFs are all so touchy, if it's not the MAF then my next guess would be fuel...

Or! You have a leak in your intercooler piping, are you sure one of your connectors or transitions didn't pop off? If they are leaking you'll run rich, foul plugs, idle like ****, and won't start.

HI, I might have figured it out,

since your removed the plugs and what above them, chances that you got very close to the fuel pressure regulator, and accidently removed the vaccum line of off it. If you did that, the car will run rich as you are building up the fuel pressure inside the fuel rail and the fuel has no where to go except into the engine.

Check the vacumm line if it is unplugged or damaged, on the fuel pressure regulator.

Or Maybe the return line? Not trying to be a **** but unplugging the Vac Line will only raise about 5psi not much more...

Check yuo MAF and o2 Sensor...

ding! ding! ding!it WAS a leak.. a big one at that too.

so today, i changed the plugs started it with a some hesitation. i had to blip the gas for it to idle decent. test drove it running fine but NO boost! so i was pretty much sure my intercooler piping had a big *** leak. (car HAD boost prior this issue). so, drove it back home and inspected the piping and voila, one of the metal ring things underneath the car was loose, i could actually shift the piping back and forth. so i tightened it up.. tightened all of them to be sure, started the motor and no more hesitation.car is running like a champ. thanks to all who gave input.. i appreciate it!
