Car: CA18DET engine building

Post

I was curious about where do people find manuals on the JDM CA18DET engines on rebuilding and maintenance. I'm definitely buying a CA18DET engine for my 86 200SX and I would like to find out where the best places to purchase front clips in the USA and to find guides on installation and swapping from the current CA20ET.

Anyone here swapped the CA18DET into any of the S12 models and can give me some pointers and troubles that they've run into?

thanksjw

Some of the J-spec S12s came with a CA18DET, physically it falls right in, pretty much just the wiring. I imagine you would have to do the same harness splicing as the 240SX guys when swapping in the DET, not a whole lot of trouble at all.

udel.. where did u get a ca20et?

this isnt me but an email i saved off a message board.. I know its a ca18de, but its probably all the same ****.

Hi everyone.

After getting my S12 for nearly a year and being too busy to do anything on it, I have FINALLY got the CA18DE/T engine fitted to the car. Unfortunately, the timing could have been a bit better, I have fitted the non turbo version of the engine as I have not really been able to start seriously rebuilding another DET that I have sitting in the garden shed. Anyhow the idea was to get ancilliaries and computer working on the DE before going for the DET setup a little further down the road. Who knows?, maybe with some luck I may consider making a bit of a CA18DE NA buildup, but that all depends on what I can get done when. Anyhow, for all you who have been contemplating this swap but are worried about the potential difficulties of this, here are some details. I have now completed actually physically fitting the motor, but I will have to wait till next weekend to wire the car up. I have scoped out the wiring on both looms, and when I know it works, I will detail the electrical changes in a seperate post.

1. Gearbox. The stock CA20E gearbox was retained when I fitted the CA18DE. The bellhousing is a perfect match, both blocks are identical. Oh yea, be careful, each gearbox bolt is a different length, the top two are the medium length ones, the next two left and right are the longest, and the lowest 2 left and 2 right are the shortest. You will have to change one on the intake side short bolts to something a bit longer to bolt the inlet manifold bracket on the DE/T in place.

2. Flywheel. The CA20E uses a crank as opposed to the CA18DE series 8 bolt crank. As such you NEED the new flywheel and the 8 bolts which are slightly longer than the CA20E items. Also, the suto and manual CA18 bolts are a different length, the manual's are longer because of the flywheel thickness. Other than this, all other flywheel dimensions are similar except for some kind of a lip on the CA20E's flywheel towards the clutch side.

3. ClutchI have fitted a Heavy duty Exedy/Daikin clutch for the CA18DET. The stock clutch will fit the flywheel however, PBR clutch lists the same part numbers for ALL CA series engined cars.

4. AncilliariesGet this, ALL the ancilliaries such as A/C, P/S and alternator are essentially interchangeable minus a few washers here and there. Good news with respect to maintanence etc.

5. MountsThe CA18DE on the S13 has a different 3 bolt mount bolted to the block. Unbolt it though, and you will find another bolt hole beneath that will allow you to bolt the CA20E stock mounts on directly. Do clean up the bolt hole a little bit first though. You will also be unable to bolt the intake manifold brace back on as it will not match the S12 RHS mount. Either leave it off or cut it down and drill a hole to suit the bracket on the S12 mount.

6. Clearance. There is absolutely NONE with the new engine in place! That is on my car which is RHD. The clutch master cylinder is about an inch away from the intake plenum. Good luck with the heater hoses which are even further in...

7. Auto conversion issues etc.If the engine you purchase is auto to begin with, you will have to remove the pilot converter from the crank and fit the proper pilot bearing for the manual transmission. I paked the pilot recess with grease and jammed a similar sized shaft in to force the bearing out by hydraulic action. The Drive plates (plate covering bellhousing on engine side) is different on an auto engine. You will find the lower half of it is non existent on the auto one (its place is taken by the auto transmission inspection plate). Use your old CA20E manual plate instead. Do not do what I did and bolt the clutch and transmission up only to realise I could see the flywheel teeth from under the engine....the perils of working at night.

All in all, it is a very straightforward swap. Post if you have any questions, I will keep y'all posted when it is FINISHED, hope this helps out anyone who is holding back from this swap from a lack of info.

cheers from down under,dan

Sorry for the misunderstanding... I have the CA20DE (DE?) in the car right now.... Its not like the T is that big of a hork'n difference for this engine anyway.

However, today, I am the proud owner (snicker snicker) of a non running Black 86 200SX XE hatch CA20E with minimal rust, two spare stock(15s) tires, no radio and in need of serious TLC for 250 bucks. I'm going to rebuild the stocker engine and clean the entire car from inside out. I imagine by that time, I should have the CADET I want and I just might be able to sell off the 2.0L stock... The interior is black and in great condition considering the age. Locks and doors are in good shape, there is rust thorugh on ONE spot above the rear left fender but nothing a little bondo wont patch. It cries for attention....and it will rise from its ashen shape.

I have been collecting knowledge and pictures and parts lists for these cars. I've studied distributors and hunted for the proper engine swaps. I'm going to buy a front clip (with everthing so I dont miss out on important electronics) of a CA18DET 180SX. Is there a particular year Silvia that I should hunt?

Can anyone tell me about the rear (diff) of the car? Is it open diff and can an LSD fit in there? What a short wheel base.

I need to change the gauge faces on a swap right?

The car looks as if somebody loved it but never knew anything about the breed. They had it armour coated and it was clean inside though it has been sitting a while. Its an old car, but when I'm done (this will be a slow and careful project). I closely examined the vehicle, and it is in good shape for its age. I hope it does not become the money pit. I find myself really liking the style and ease of modification for this car. Wish I had a digi camera.
