A customer of mine has a 1989 240sx, with the 2.4 SOHC engine and an automatic trans. He brought it to my shop because, according to him, the brake pedal felt a little weird. By weird, he meant that it went to the floor and the car didn't stop at all. The master cylinder is leaking badly, as well as the ABS module on the passenger side of the engine bay. He wants to fix the car, but he doesn't have the money to replace the ABS module, provided that I can even source one. From what I understand, ABS was a very rare option on these cars back in 1989.

What I want to do is simply bypass the module, but I'm not exactly sure how I can do that without removing the proportioning valve from the system, since near as I can tell the prop valve is part of that big ABS module that's currently leaking brake fluid all over the place. Does anyone know how I can bypass that module and still have the car brake safely? I know that the correct way to fix this problem is to replace the module, but even if I could find one, it's going to be exceedingly expensive, and it'll cost the customer an arm and a leg in labor to get it bled out. Thanks in advance for any help.

Non ABS M/C?

You'll need to make some new lines too.

I'll give that a try. I don't know why that didn't occur to me. I've got no problem making new lines, that's the easy part. I'm the guy at the shop that is usually handed the big trucks that need to have the hard lines replaced, so I'm used to that kind of thing.

I suggested bypassing the ABS module to my boss earlier today. He told me that I wasn't allowed to do that for liability reasons. He got me a replacement master cylinder for the car, I installed and bled it all out, and the pedal feels a lot better than it did when the car came in. It's still not as hard as I'd like, but it's a damn sight better than it was when it came in. At least the car will stop under it's own power now, rather than me having to throw it in neutral and hoping for the best. I would have used the hand brake to slow down, but the lever is missing, it's simply a cable attached to a pair of vice grips. But that's a repair for another time, or maybe not at all. Makes no difference to me.
