Buying used 2008 - how much to pay

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I am looking at a loaded 2008 with 25000 miles. It is being sold be dealer but is not a CPO.

It is loaded - Tech, Lux, Premium, Nav.

How much should I pay? They are asking $32k, which seems outrageous since people are buying 2010s with Nav for $34k.

I have been looking at 2010 new EX35. $32K for a 2008 model seems rather high, doesn't it? However, if you look at the kbb pricing, for a dealership suggested retail value, it is about right. I guess this car has good resale value!

Anyway, what I am more surprised about is your statement that 2010 with nav can be had for $34K? Are you referring to a Journey AWD, with Tech, Premium and Nav again? The lowest that I have got so far is just under $39K for that (MSRP $44715) but that was without trying too hard to negotiate...

I wonder what everyone else is getting quoted for a new, loaded 2010 EX35?

If you are truly getting such a low price for a 2010 vehicle, I would probably just forget about the used one and get the new one, period! :-)

The new one isn't the same spec. But here are some deals I have seen posted on the Edmund's Carspace forum:

1) A member in Atlanta bought a 2010 Journey with Nav/Bose for 33k including delivery, not including taxes2) Another member bought a 2010 Journey with Nav, Bose, Premium, Roof bars, 18" wheels, splash guard, for 35K +tax

Relative to the 35k 2010 deal, I get Tech package, but I I lose 2 years and 25,000 miles for $3k saving. That math doesn't add up.

In my experience dealer list price on used cars is just their dream. It wouldn't be on the lot for over a month now, if that was the market price. I am wondering though what should I negotiate for - 27k, 28k, or 29k? My style is I set a target and stick to it. It may take a couple of weeks to close with the dealer but that's fine as long as I don't leave money on the table.

If you look at the private selling price of a used EX35 with the mileage and options that you have listed on kbb, I believe it comes out to be about $29K. Please check it out. You should really aim for that. Start with a lower number than your target, and then let the dealer negotiate up to your target price :-)

I wonder if those people on the Edmunds board get an AWD model? Those are fantastic deals!

I just went to the Edmunds forum, took the listed purchasing prices and then did my "homework" for their invoice prices on Edmunds. I found that basically, they are getting anywhere between $2500 to just under $3000 BELOW invoice (surely they are using the $3000 dealer cash, so the price that the dealers sold the cars for was around or just slightly above invoice).

So I think that is what you should aim for with a new one - $2500 to $3000 below invoice.

The offer that I got was about $2100 below invoice. That was clearly not good enough then! Oh well, I guess I barely negotiated there, but also, the salesperson was not that enthusiastic. So I am seeing another dealer today!

Now it's down to the EX35 or the Q5... the Q5 is more money, but it's also a larger interior and cargo area, as well as gas mileage too... but I like the handling and the reliability of Infiniti... decisions, decisions!

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't know if I mentioned, but these are RWD not AWD.

I actually found another one also with all the same options. Black/Black which I prefer. Only 19,000 miles. Dealer is asking $30k + tax. I will try to get it for $30k out the door.

There is no money factor for the 2008 since Infiniti only offers leases on new cars, not on used ones. They also don't have an financing special offers, so you are on your own with a bank loan. Bank rates on used cars for 36 months are around 5%.

Do you think I should expect to pay less than 27,500 (the number that gets me to $30k all-in)?

I got him to cut the price from 30k to 29k. Should I go further, aim for another 500 dollars. He claims he is all in at this point.

that was quick....i think another grand is easily feasible. express how you are absolutely serious about the car, but you feel the correct pricepoint is closer to "X" after doing some research on current value and what other forum members are "getting" for their price offers.

it's the end of the year, AND almost the end of the month, he'll try to wrap this up

You can chance it and come back on the 3oth or 31st (whatever their last business day of the month is). It it's still sitting there, they will most likely cut an outrageous deal to get it out. End of month and end of year.

There's also the possibility that someone else might buy it before you do. Either way, you can always find used cars. If this one gets away, there will be more.

You should be able to get a used 2008 for a song...much less than you are getting offered.

They have to compete with the current offerings out there for new EX's. A dealer agreed to on my 2010 AWD Journey, Premium/Nav. Dark Currant/Chestnut...also included Tonneau Cover, Hood Protector, Roof rails...MSRP Sticker $43,045...$3000 cash to dealer...so it's $40,045 their money...got it down to $36,300...which is $7,000 off the sticker but relative to the cash back deal.

So for $6,000 more you could get a 2010 RWD with no miles vs. a 2008 that seems to have been the year most of the problems on the forum come from...and have a full warranty.

Hell offer them $22,000 and let them squirm with a 2008 with plenty of miles on it sit on their lot.

Got a email flyer from Grubbs Infiniti here in Dallas last week for their "Winter event", it listed two 2010 EX35's with MSRP $39,580 marked down $5,682 to $33,898.

Unfortunately, there was absolutely no other information on the vehicles However, their website http://www.grubbsinfiniti.com indicates they got a $5000 off deal on, thru to January 4th.
