Theres a white s13 thats been sittin at body shop near my aunts house where i do all my work on my car for over a year. i went there today to ask about it. the sunroof glass is smashed and the timing chain guides are broke. the owner doesnt want to pay to fix it so its $3000 fixed or $1500 as is. the owner of the shop wants it out of his way so hes goint o call the guy and talk down the price for me. i forgot to ask about the milage but its white with body in great shape, has hicas, auto, KADE (91-94), hatch. so i figure ill buy it hopefully for a lil less than $1000fix it myself then sell it. its not worth it to part it since its in good shape i would keep it but i dont want another auto or hicas that much.

question i have about the chain guides:can i jsut replace the upper chain and tensionor and be fine? does the lower timing chain really need to be done? since the guides broke i will have to take off the oil pan to get them out right? any advice on this deal would be appreciated.

depends on the mileage.

it is recommended at 90-120+ miles to redo the timing chain. if its mileage is high (100+) and all the tensioners and stuff are breaking, its best to do a whole timing chain job: chains, guides, tensioners.

when its all fixed up make sure you offer the car to NICO first before autoshopper or ebay :) im sure theres a few people here lookin for a new ride

i will definitly offer to NICO first. ur answer wasnt too clear to me. i want to know if the lower chain is neccassary. if the guides are broke on that too then it will get replaced but has anyone ever had that happen? i always see it being the upper chain guides that go. the bottom is kinda enclosed all around the chain

SJ rules...:rockon

The two upper guides are largely unecessary, no need to replace them. If they broke off, then they are most likely sitting in the oil pan, and you would need to drop it to get them out.

However, the broken guides are probably the lower guides, and for the amount of labor you would have to put in to replace them, you may as well do the entire chain + sprockets. It's just not worth it to do it halfway. Technically, NO, you don't have to replace every single component, but why go to all the effort of tearing the front of the engine off (and believe me, it's effort), replace one thing, and then have something else in that area fail within a month? That's my take on it.
