hi guys, my car is s14 96 stock KA with 101,000 mileage.Rigth now the check engine light is on..that's sad.I plan to buy the obd II reader. after check around it could costfrom 20$ to 200+.

I would like to know which one is right for me. I don't run a mechanic shop; just a try-to-be DIY dude.I am not a cheap dude, but I don't wantto pay for what I'm not gonna use too.

Basically, I need to read the obd II code error, reset it.Not sure if any features of obd II reader is good to have.

what are the basic features that when you buy the readerit has to be there otherwise you won't buy it...

Thanks you in advance.Appreciate your time to read and possibly replyPat

Depending on the build date, you may have OBD I. Nissan switched to OBD II halfway through the 1996 model year.

all 1996 and new model year cars have to be obd2 compatible as mandated by the us governmant. for the do it your self scan tool look for one that reads codes but also give the code description. you probably wont want one that will perform data monitoring. the best one for you is probably in the 50-80 dollar range and will do more than enough to help you fix your car.

Nissan didn't actually complete the changeover until the 2000 MY if I remember correctly. Anything up until that point had two OBD connectors. One was white and that one was supposed to be the OBD II connector but it doesn't actually do anything. The one that actually does anything in the way of OBD is the grey one, which is the OBD I connector.
