Are you trying to some how actually answer his question about what to look for on a rebuilt turbo or are you just chiming in so you can try and sound smart? Because all you told him was "it's a risk" and did nothing to actually help him.
Driftcardotnet wrote:So you find a turbo for sale on craigslist, it says Used rebuilt Garrett GT28R $300, the first thought that comes to my mind is wow what a great price what's wrong with it, but then that price comes into mind and i think but man thats cheap, what if its ok.... so what do i look for with a so called Rebuilt Garret GT28R?
Anyways...It's hard to tell if a turbo's good or not just by looking at it. I'd ask him who rebuilt the turbo, I'd be really hesistant to buy it if he rebuilt it himself. Also ask him why it was rebuilt. Most likely he'll say "it was blown" but try to find out if it just got old and died or if something actually happened.Check for shaft play. Make sure the compressor wheel blades and the exhaust turbine blades are intact (not chipped off or anything).
