Guess it depends on the state in which you live. In Georgia, there is no tax paid on a private party sale. Just a tag fee when you register it.

And Craigslist is the way to go, thats where I found mine.

What's wrong with buying one through a dealer? I think that's an excellent price and I could almost guarantee that you could get another $1000 knocked off, if not more. If it is a somewhat reputable dealer then it's better to buy through them than through private purchase. A reputable dealer will make sure you are happy with the vehicle and take care of you if you have any issues right after you buy the car. Private purchase is nice since you can get the car cheaper, but you have to purchase the vehicle as-is and you have no recourse if something goes wrong with the vehicle (or if something was already wrong with the vehicle when you purchased it).

Just remember, in the state of NJ (and probably most other states) you have three days to back out of a contract. If you don't like the vehicle, you can return it to the dealer within three days for a full refund. Just make sure that within those three days you have the vehicle checked out by a mechanic you can trust. If you don't know of a good mechanic, take it to your local Nissan dealership.

Going back to the blue Pathy for a minute, what would be a fair offer to make and then negotiate upwards from, based on mileage and year?

Well this was a moot topic. New swaybar linkage and an alignment seems to have done the trick. Plus the mechanic adjusted the hinge on my gas tank cover so it sits flush with the body again and replaced my dead fog light.

Price was way less than the value of the truck. Think I'll keep her around for another 100K or so.

Now to detail the crap out of her once the weather gets nicer. Think I may even spring for a new sound system.
