I recently stumbled on a 1991 G20 for $1800. So I called about it today and it doesn't have 5th at all, but for that price can you go wrong? It has a lot of miles, but its the most solid car I've ever driven, the previous owner obviously maintained it more than properly. Would guys take the gamble and buy it, or should I keep looking?

HOw many miles are we talking about on the motor? Any rust problems? The 5th gear issue really isn't a big deal, because you can get non LSD transmissions for $150. But $1800 seems high. I sold a 95 g20 w/154k miles with a swapped 200sx transmission with LSD and no 5th gear issues for $2200. No rust either. Excellent condition g20 with 160k is only worth 1900 private party, 1200 fair condition and 1600 good condition. I say keep looking not unless they will take a grand for it.

Price is high with no 5th. As RED said, I'd talk them down. Still, if it's as solid as you say, swap in a fresh transmission and have yourself a good beater.
