Post what you own here and what you'd recommend. I'd like to buy a handgun and then eventually a hunting rifle.

I'm leaning towards the Springfield XD9-c because I love the grip. I'm heading to the gun shop tonight to shoot a few different handguns to get a feel for what I like.

Are you going to be using it for anything special, or just range shooting?

I love 1911's, especially ones that have been modded up a little bit.

I just love that look!

Either that or i'm just a .45 fan.

That is a fine looking gun. I'd love one of those from the WWII era-- just minus the price tag

In a handgun I'm looking for personal protection / concealed carry / range shooting. I was thinking of Glock or XD because they are decently priced and good beginner handguns. I was leaning XDc because of the size of the handgun for concealed carry (I have my PA LTCF) and also I thought the XD to be more comfortable in my hands then the Glocks.

In a rifle I'm looking for range shooting / hunting (deer in PA & possibly NY so it can't have the evil features).

I have a SpringField XD .45ACP. I love it but I kinda wish I would have gotta a .40. The kick on this thing is unreal. I have a Streamlight TLR-1 on it too. It is Hella Bright. I love it.

what up dj! i prefer a revolver... something like a Ruger GP100? nice and classic look and feel, plus durable and it doesn't jam.

^ the 6" barrel... i was looking to purchase (hopefully soon)

but as marlin stated, kimbers are awesome guns too... a bit on the pricey side tho but fairly accurate... i also like the sig pro220

rifles? never shot a rifle before so i wouldn't know...

I am a huge fan of a Baretta A/F 92 (I own one), great looking, almost unbreakable, and great stopping power for a 9mm. and of course you can never go wrong with a glock...littig for a hip holster c&c but shoulder is fine, also 17 bullet clip is a must 'caus i'll miss with the 1st 15, lol.

Holy jeebus...you Americans and your guns...

I never realized you lot were so gung-ho about your firearms until Doc's post about someone trying to break into his car...he mentioned something about the piece he has at home and this entire discussion about firearms evolved.

I realize that in theory a society where everyone carries might be safer, but then again we don't seem to have many problems up here in the great frozen north where if you want to take your sidearm out of your house you've gotta have five different permits, registration forms signed in triplicate, wear matching socks, and kiss your auntie on the cheek before leaving the premises...

.............but we do seem to have a crapload of stabbings here (especially in Calgary).

+1 for Rob.Vegan and his Lock, Stock quote (it was the first thing I thought of posting when I saw this thread!). I dig my knives...and my swords...and my throwing knives...and my shuriken...and my blow darts.

I thought I'd get a streamlight tactical light attachment for my gun when I bought it too, but a few days ago I came to the realization that I'd probably never use a light on my handgun anyway...

Nice. Did you modify your AR-15 at all? Post pics!

Nice, this is what I was thinking of getting. Let me know what laser grip you decide to go with and how it works for you.

You sure it was an XD-9? They have barely any kick-- your buddy must have the XD-45...

Not very sissy when the .45 ACP blows your arm off.

Friend of mine was a gunsmith, he highly recommended not getting a Glock if you ever need work done on it. I want a handgun too, I've been looking for one. Atm I just have 3 shotguns, looking at getting a pistol grip on my 20 gauge for home defense :P

Glocks are so simple though, you shouldn't need to do work on it, very few moving parts very reliable but right if you do need it serviced it may prove costly or difficult to find a reputable gunsmith.

Go for the new Springfield XDm 9mm. Match grade barrel, great grips, 19 round capacity, and is supposed to be very accurate. Friend of mine shot the .40 version and said its great. Also, two of the people that got one of the first 9mm models at on of the local shops were raving about how accurate they are. My fave toy is Kahr MK9 by the way. Makes for a nice CCW.

Whatever you decide on, get it in .40. It's a much more effective round. .357 Sig is also a very good round.

Canadians... lol. Ever hear the saying 'Don't bring a knife to a gun fight'? Even though crime might be low, it can happen to anybody. Just like the Greyhound bus decapitation in Canada over the summer, a firearm would've given me peace of mind in a situation like that.

We carry Beretta Storms at work.

Canadian gun crime is wayy wayyy wayyyy lower than the US, but when you look at crimes committed with other weapons like knives, we have the highest crime rate per capita.

We cut you meh.......we cut you reeelll good....

The springfield XD series is probably the best line of hand guns out right now. They are about to come out with a version of the XD as well. They torture test them and put them threw the glock testing process as well. Plus they are very balaced and the sights keep there zero. Glocks tend to lose there site picture after the first 100 rounds and will need adjusting. If you plan on going to the range alot then get the 9mm. Also because you don't seem to be an experienced gunsman or if you have a wife or girlfriend that you plan on teaching to use it. Get the 9mm. The 9mm with still stop someone in there tracks if you use hallowpoints or hydoshocks. I prefer hydroshocks because they splitter alot better in the body and just about ensure a kill. Plus they will fragment when they hit walls so you don't haft to worry about shooting someone in the next room or across the street.

If you want more stopping power, get a .40 If you are an experienced shooter get the .45 But .4 and ,45 amoo is alot more expensive if takeing it to the range alot. My next gun will be the XD.45 ACP.

I am a very experienced shooter and served 5 years in the Army as an Infantryman. I have shot everything from a Barret .50cal to a Mark 19 automatic Grenade Launcher. Experience with fire arms should play a big role in the selection you make for a firearm. Upping the caliber for stopping power does you no good if you can't hit the target and control the fire arm.

As far as rifles, I like the Ruger .308 Great long distance rifle and shouldnt brake the bank. But sights are the next important thing for a rifle. A good sight is going to cost you.

I agree 100%... .40 or .45 caliber aren't very good beginner handguns IMO
