Hi all! After 14 years with a truck (and 3 motorcycles, which get far more mileage) I'm in need of a new vehicle. I spent all day at the local Infiniti dealer and drove the G37x sedan and coupe, an FX, a used Acura TS and a used WRX STi. I really liked the G37x's and am now in a pickle about getting a coupe vs. a sedan. I don't have kids, don't plan on having any anytime soon, and am debating practicality vs. fun. I'm curious to hear from any coupe owners if they find the lack of a real rear seat to be limiting, given that the seats fold down to access the trunk space. Likewise, any input sedan owners could give about the limitation of a hard wall between the trunk and rear seat would be appreciated. The sedan is almost as fun to drive, but since the seats don't fold down to access the trunk I could see this eliminating some of the benefit of a rear seat space. I do occasionally have to pick up bulky or long items from the hardware store and wonder if the coupe is a better choice for that--give me a reason I can give my girlfriend to argue the coupe is more practical!

I have both. Stock vs stock I like the coupe better as it's more fun, IMO. The stereo is better as well in the coupe vs. sedan. The sedan has a bigger/deeper trunk and can take two good sized suitcases whereas you can only squeeze one in the coupe. You can get multiple people in the coupe but I would only suggest that for short trips.

Overall, from a performance perspective, you will be fine with both. Coupe is a bit heavier.

Get the coupe and on those rare occasions when you need pick up something large borrow your neighbor's truck! :gapteeth:
That's what I do.
When you get the kiddies then trade for a sedan.

The coupe and sedan are basically the same car. The coupe's trunk is smaller and it only has two doors. The coupe's back seats are OK for a long trip. It's just a long way back there. There also may be less headroom.

The coupe's doors are very wide. I put my computer and briefcase on the floor behind the driver's seat and a lunch cooler behind the front passenger's seat. With the seat backs folded forward, they are easy to put in and take out.

The coupe has enough room for two people unless they want to drag along everything they own. My wife and I used ours for a week long vacation. We filled the trunk and put the overflow in the back seat. One thing that went into the trunk was a disassembled antique drill press which we delivered to a collector.

Another way to quantify the coupe's trunk capacity is to say that it will take a full shopping cart of groceries. You would need the back seat for a second cart.

As far as stuff from the hardware store is concerned, neither the coupe nor the sedan is a substitute for a pickup or van. You aren't going to get sheets of plywood into either.

If you prefer the looks of the coupe, you might as well get that. The only advantage I can see for the sedan is the extra doors and they are important only if you have a child seat or if adults are frequently getting into and out of the back seats.

Two options I woud recommend are the premium package and navigation package. Premium gets you many luxury features. The car is rather plain without them. I value the navigation package for the rear view camera that comes with it. Rear visibility is pretty limited otherwise.

I've had an 05 coupe and my current 09 sedan. It really comes down to how often you need access to the backseat. If you think that you'll need to use it more than 50% of the time, get the sedan.

Heres my two cents. First thing is where do you live. I am not clear if the coupe you are considering is also an X. I have owned both a G35 and G37 coupe and it is hard to pick which was worse in snow. The G coupes are the worst cars I have owned in snow in the some 40 years of car ownership.

I will disagree mildly with a couple statements by responders. I would not subject anybody older than six years old to ride in the back of a G coupe. I gave up quickly trying to get anybody to ride with me in the backseat. I found over the years( I was in a G coupe for 8 years) whenever I needed service and got a loaner that the stereo in the sedan loaners I got was superior to the coupe system. That being said the Bose system in the G is mediocre at best.

When I went to trade off my last G coupe I test drove the X sedan and just couldn't find enough extra to make that trade. Yes the trunk is bigger but to my mind not significantly enough to matter. The rear seats are more accessible because of the extra doors but its still cramped back there. Finally I thought the ride would be much better but found only a slight difference.

If I had to choose a G I would have stayed in a coupe. As others have stated its better looking and more fun. In the end I bought a FX35 because I couldn't stand one more winter in the coupe and wanted more room and the G sedan just wasn't different enough. Good luck!

Thanks for all the input! I knew I'd get an answer in an enthusiast's forum!

I'm looking at the G37x coupe, with AWD, as I now live in Colorado and will be commuting to/from work in the winter. Others have told me the x versions handle fine in the snow, and the coupe is actually slightly heavier than the sedan. It sounds like the coupe is the winner from a fun standpoint, and honestly, I'd only be using the back seat maybe 5-10% of the time.

Now I have to start planning my mods.... finally, a 4-wheel vehicle I'm excited to farkle!

If driving in snow with the coupe, even with the x, I'd get a set of winter tires/rims. They make all the difference in the world! We have members in Canada with coupes that do fine in the winter, as long as they have the right sneakers on...

I almost never have passengers other than my girlfriend, and she has no desire for babies for a while yet. And she encouraged me to get the coupe. :chuckle:
Thanks for the info and the link! Will be very pricey, but hey, pricey car, eh?

So I pulled the trigger today, got the G37xs with Navigation, Premium and Sport packages, spoiler, splash guards, illuminated kick plates... and the cargo net/emergency kit/carpeted trunk mat. Wouldn't have picked the latter but it was already in the car, and I got the whole thing for $44,232, almost $700 below dealer invoice (per Consumer Reports). Cashed in on the last day of the 1.9% financing offer, and they gave me a great no-haggle trade-in on my 14 year-old truck. I'm very excited! GF is ready to take a ride into the mountains tomorrow. :woot: Will be hanging out here a LOT, I think. :) Thanks for all the advice everybody, great to see an active community!

Well, you take care now. Babies have been known to happen in the back seats of coupes. :yesnod

Congratulations on the purchase. Don't be a stranger around here.

Given its size, I doubt any babies will be happening in the back seat of *this* coupe. ;)

Thanks again, I look forward to being an active member. Slightly OT (and I hope I can be forgiven for this), I must say that everyone who participated in this thread was great. I expected there to be one or two flame-bait comments (eg, "Buy what you like, n00b" etc), since you see that a lot in motorcycle enthusiast forums, but all who commented gave really helpful input. You're a stand-up bunch--thanks for all your advice!

She's a beaut, and an absolute joy to drive. I've put her through about 600 miles, mostly in the mountains, and she is giddy fun. I'm not thrilled with the Nav system, especially the limitations imposed when you're driving or use voice command, but it's more convenient than mounting my Garmin to the windshield--especially since that's where the radar detector has to go now. Maybe it's time for a built-in detector.... I definitely need one, saved me from at least 3 tickets yesterday. It floats along at a ton soooooo easily, you don't even realize you're speeding!! :dblthumb:

But I can probably speak for both of us that a bikini would not be out of place. Such a sexy car should be appropriately accompanied.
