buying a car with an SR under the hood in California

sorry if this is a stupid question but this will be my first time buying a car.i found a 240sx with an sr20de under the hood for a pretty good deal. i was wondering if i buy the car, what needs to be done about the smog?do i need to provide papers to register the car?
