I am hoping someone has some experience and can help me out.

I am in the process of buying a Q from a guy in Pittsburgh. I am buying it with the intention of taking what I need, and parting the rest.

He called me today and told me that I need to register it with AAA in Penn. before I can drive it home. Apparently, he can't just sign the title over to me?

When I have sold cars in Michigan before, the process was pretty simple. I signed over the Title to the new owner. Done. After that, it was their problem. They took the title and registered the vehicle with the Secretary of State office. Payed registration, taxes, and license.

I can take the VIN and get myself some insurance for the day from my insurance company. But, I am not sure what to do about a license plate for the drive home. And, the doood I am buying it from says we need to go to the AAA office and officially sign over the car from him to me....at which point I will have to pay Penn. registration and tax?

I just want to make sure I have all my info correct. I had no intention of insuring or even registering the vehicle once I had it home. I doubt it will be whole and intact for more than a few days, so whats the point.

Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

Sounds like he's just covering his *** - doesn't want any question about liability with you behind the wheel. I can't imagine that a private company like AAA has anything to do with Penn state licensing law. I would think that proof that you're covered under your own insurance should be enough to make his Nosy McNone-of-his-business self happy.

I drove from Chicago (where my plates were stolen) to Fargo with no plates on my car, and it was allright. I think most Smokies would let you go after you show them that you own the car and will be taking it to your home state for licensing (or not).

This guy is confusing selling a car with running some other guy's life. :uglylol

It will have to be registered in PA to leave the state, but there should be a transport license good for 30 days to get you out of state. Call the Motor Vehicles Department in PA, or go to their web site.

Don't try to buy a car in NY if you think this is tough.

Thanks for the help guys. Apparently this isn't terribly complicated. When I spoke to this guy on the phone earlier today, he made it sound like we might need to get NASA involved in the transaction. This was going to be nothing short of taking it to the moon.

Just so I am clear. There is no reason I should have to pay PA taxes on the vehicle, right? And, transferring the title will have a small cost I think, right?

Finally, the car has been in storage long enough that he hasn't had it pass inspecition. Any reason this should cause me any problems? I am bringing it back to the great state of MI where car inspections don't exist.

Florida is the best. You can get a title printed out on the spot for $35.

In California the owner signs over the pink slip and the new owner drives away with the car and the pink slip. It is the seller's responsibility to then mail a form to DMV, which comes in the same envelope as the pink slip, stating the time, date and vehicle mileage when sold. This form releases the seller of any liability should the new owner crash and burn the car. Finally, it is the buyer's responsibility to reregister the car. If the car is from out of state, the buyer needs to work with the other state's DMV to get a statement of title and then reregister it in CA. The reregistration and title transfer do not have to be done before leaving the state.

There are 50 states and every one does it a bit differently. I personally would balk at having to go to AAA and pay any fees or sign any forms. Search the PA DMV website and see what they say avout it. Good luck, hope you make lots of $$$ on the part out.

bought my 69 vette in Philly last fall. You need to have the title signed by both parties infront of a public notary. After that...the car is officially all yours and it is up to you to take care of registration and the other stuff from that point forward.

rob is correct. both parties have to sign the title, in person, at a notary. as long as AAA is a notary (sure it is), this is good too. FYI, might be cheaper to find an independent notary in his area than go to AAA. in many places of PA, a notary can be found operating out of a residential house.

Thanks again guys. Sounds like this should be pretty straight forward.

Jeff, I will have Wes with me when I go...so, hopefully we will be able to put out heads together and figure this out if we bump in to any problems. But, if I have any questions, I will definately let you know.

Thanks again for all the help!
