I am looking at purchasing a 1995 R33 GT-R. The car is registered and titled in my state. It is not a Motorex car so my assumption is that it was brought in through Florida or something like that where it got a title and then registered in my state. To me this is not legit, but hence my following question.

If it is not brought here through the correct method, does the 25 year rule override that? It is a February built car from what I was told, so only 2 months to the magic 25 years.

Would I be ok legally with it (including having an insurance company that won’t try to back out of a claim) if it doesn’t have the proper forms (like the EPA form 3520-1 and the DOT form HS-7), because of the 25 year rule, or am I going to be out of luck if it doesn’t have all paperwork (I know it has the build date info, but that may be it).

Cliff notes: Does the 25 year rule apply to vehicles brought here before they were 25 year old vehicles and not a MotorEx car?

Nope. You're asking for trouble, considering it wasn't brought in legitimately in the first place. That doesn't go away after the 25th year.

I was confused about VCP-32. It seems if the car was a 96 and this was 2021, it may have been ok, but since this is a 95 car, it is not eligible to.

So I guess the 25 year import rule is not just a 25 year rule. I was hoping when it hit its 25 year date it would be clean and clear.

Yep. As lame as the rules are, it's not worth getting your car impounded because some douchey importer decided to pull a fast one on buyers.

If that's how it worked, I'd currently have a warehouse full of R34s waiting patiently.

Thanks, I was uncomfortable with any non-motorex R33, but was hoping this may have worked. I never took registered as road legal to begin with and don’t want any headaches. The nice thing was I could inspect the vehicle before purchase.

Oh well, I guess I can wait a few more months and get one with all the correct paperwork.

Thanks for the help.

You bet - Good luck.

FWIW, I've had good luck with importavehicle.com on a couple purchases.
