Hi,

I was looking into buying a 240sx as a first car and was wondering if this was a good idea. I was thinking of a 1990, and wondered if anyone had any advice on this.

Thanks Jeff

I'll speak from the NON-240 crowd (I own a Q).

The 240 should be a great first car. If you can get a newer model, that's always preferable, but it's a real reliable car that's inexpensive to repair and easy to maintain. Lots of knowledgeable folks here that can help you out as well. Post this in the 240 General Chat Forum for more input. Good luck!

Since I am from the other side of this NissanInfinti board let me summarize the 240SX with some objective distance.

-rear wheel drive, -good value, -with a modern ergonomic interior, -very good power for a 4 cylinder, close to some 6 cylinders- well balanced suspension,-looks good inside and out-great reliability

-only complaint I ever hear about the car is lack of power comparted to the big boys (V6, V8's), but its the most powerful car in its class, ie 4 cylinder SportsCoupes.

Has a fiercely loyal following.

get the 240 man. it looks great (especially the coupes ;)) and handles amazing. has decent power, but its rear wheel drive fun makes up for the lack of power. once you do get going tho, you won't have to slow down much for curves :D actually, yes, do slow down, but they handle remarkable right out of the factory.

Get to know the car well B 4 you try an take curves at high speeds. The light weight rwd 240 can get out of hand easy when not carefull.:slap I'd hate to see a 240 in a ditch or gardrail!

Jeff,As a 240 owner, I would highly recommend buying one. I would recommend buying the 5sp manual transmission if you can. As Fred points out, they are normally cheap cars to buy. A buddy of mine picked his 92 for @3k and I picked mine up for @4k. Both are in good condition. There are plenty of aftermarket parts and mods that you can purchase online. The 240's are light cars and have good torque rating from its 2.4l inline 4-cylinder engine. The 1989-90 models were SOHC engines and the 91s and on are DOHC engines. The engine bays are not cramped, so working on the car is pretty easy. If you need help buying one, let us know. Plenty of us have been in the same situation.

Thanks Guys this Is a Huge Help, So what I got so far is to go up a few years to the newer model and look around a lot. And there is no way I would ever buy an automatic car what fun is there in that. Oh by the way do they really drift like everyone says.

Thanks again, Jeff

I drifted in my Altima this weekend, on an entrance ramp to the interstate. Buddy nearly crashed into me when I lost it. If that had happened, 9 months later my car would give birth to a Spec V.

Oh yes, they drift all right. Mine decided it wanted to do some uncontrolled drifting on an off-ramp lol. Just get really use to the way it handles before you try taking any turns at high speeds

I like my 240, and 95 se. My advice is to have a mech check it out. You may also want to check the alignment, they're known for going outside of spec caster; mine has a little problem with that.
