The obvious check of the service history by giving the VIN to an Infiniti dealer is the biggie (the 60K service hurts $$$ if it hasn't been FULLY done). Other than that it's gauging shock wear (take it for a sprited drive), tire/brake remaining life and cosmetics. I also paid my dealer to do an inspection just to make sure there were no well hidden signs of a frame crunch. Does it have any kind of an extended warranty? When I got mine it had a couple things wrong that were thankfully covered. The remote would have been over $200! Don't even ask about the radio.....Sorry if I'm stating the obvious. All in all they seem to be pretty sound cars.

Thanks for the tips.I'm going to take it for a test drive later today. Tires look new but are not the best. Toyo 215 60 16 (R rated)?I think I'm going to take it over to the Infiniti dealer and have them check it out. No extended warranty "As is". I didn't purchase the extended warranty on my 95Q and I would have never used it. I like the car a lot, it's a nice dark metallic green. How much is the 60K service? Same as the first generations in maintenance, isn't it?

The brakes seemed to be a little rusty. Does anyone know if that's a bad thing. I thought maybe it's just due to the car sitting a while.

For the 13K and trade in, say 14K total it seems that the 98Q45 is the most car for the money. I'm looking at 99 loaded Accords, Camry's, and Maximas none of which really sell for this amount. Plus Mom doesn't even like them. I hope I'm not pushing her in the wrong direction.....

I got my 98 Q45t from South Bay Infiniti (Torrance CA) about 2 months ago. It had 75k and was 16.5, I got it for 16. I got the CarFax and the service history from the dealer. Also, as-is, of course the Service Eng. light came on like a week later lol, 2 secondary O2's and it's been fine.

The dealer I had inspect mine offered me an ex. warranty for 4 yrs/60K for about $900 but that was before it fell out of orig warr. if that matters. Some find 'em cheaper elsewhere but they've been pretty good about doing stuff, such as:-on orig. factory warr: remote, radio-ex. warr.: front tension rods/bearing rings

The full 60K service cost me about $1100 (I think) and this included the Bilstein engine flush. Paid a little more to have the A/C dust/pollen filter changed.

Don't think the rust is a problem- just looks funky. These cars are definitely good bang for the $ right now if you find one that has been cared for.
