So, i bought this s13 with "a locked engine." I took the valve cover off to notice the smell of burnt oil and that one of the cams wouldn't budge at all. After removing the small two-bolt cam holders, i noticed some small shiny lines, which upon closer examination, turned out to be tiny grooves. Do I need to replace the entire head, or can this be polished out? Also, why would alot of oil get cooked in the head, like it becomes a solid and breaks off in chunks?

with the cooked oil?? On one of my heads, the grooves aren't that bad. It's a '93 head. One guy said that polishing it out would work but would take away from the integrity, but i'm thinkin that there are more than one of these caps to keep the cam in place. I would like to put a set of rocker arm stoppers on to insure that this doesn't happen again, would i be able to use a set made for an sr20? I've yet to notice another thread about this problem, but if someone could refer me to one it would save alot of time.

You can take out some of the inside material of the cap, but you have to make sure the diameter (or radius if you're just doing the cap) stays within spec. Then you will have to take an equal amount of material from the legs so you ensure the same total diameter. It's like maching rod caps. If '95 cam caps will work, I have a set from mine for sale. As far as rocker arms, the KA uses bucket style lifters to push the valves open.

i really wasn't sure what to call them, i figured that would give people an idea to what i was talking about. I spoke with another guy and he tells me the tiny grooves are for oil passage, i guess that kinda makes sense?
