I Bought It Now...er...then, whatever.

Now, it's from a 94 Q, *supposedly* with 57k miles, that's 100k less than mine, boys & girls.

Question;

Which year Z32 300ZX gearset do I need for the 4.08 swap? Turbo? Non? TCS? Non-TCS?

Mine's a non TCS 91, FWIW. Hope the new one is too, would that matter?

Bueller? Bueller?

Have gear marking compound & dial indicator, will travel. If I don't like it, I'll rebuild my old one & put it back in without the loss of the car, kind of a quick change rear.

TIA

If you have TCS, you can pretty much bolt-up a NA differential.

Not true.

Q45 has 6-bolt axle flanges, 300ZX n/a has 5.

HD, do a search on "4.08". This topic has been discussed at great length... You'll find lots of useful info.

p.s. If you're comfotable rebuilding a rear diff, you're one skilled individual - Not a task for the faint of heart.

Yup, forgot about those nasty five bolt flanges.

By the way, there is a reason Nissan chose the gear and differential ratios they did with the state of tune of the engine. Making it faster in a 300 ft. or quarter mile drag might well diminish it's road passing performance because of the change in the shift points. A stock G50 eats highway miles like a jetliner does airmiles.

Of all the modifications Q45tech has tried, he has never done this one. A careful reading of his posts will show it just doesn't work as well with the stock transmission ratios as a stock rear end. And there is a whole nother can of worms in matching a perfectly rebuilt (or another stock differential, for that matter) to an existing driveline in good as new condition (few are).

On the other hand, Palmerwmd is the only member to drive one with the lower rear end, and he likes it, so ask him as he has most of the experience.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

AZTEK also has or had the 4:08 gear set, I think he removed because he did not like it on the highway, Sop mentioned this over the summer. I however have ridden in a Q with the gears done and the thing felt like a beast.

I'm not too concerned about the setup, I know it's a day-long affair even when it's on the bench. Most shops slap them together in order to keep their m/h in check in a bid-quote situation.

I'm amazed how sloppy most oem diffs are when you open them & check the pinion depth & backlash. Even Honda S2000's (which have breakage issues with even normal driving) have shown to have "+/- a hammer handle" backlash.

So, AZ, do you still have one of those 4.08 diffs lying around? I could negotiate a bid cancel to cover the guy's associated costs & trouble on the 94Q diff from Ebay if you still have one & I can get an idea of what to expect on the ABS thing.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to, but it was cheap enough to keep as a spare.

In my experience the milage penalty from the 4.08 is very small even on the highway.

I routinely get better than 20 mpg on hiway with a 4.08, this compares favorably with what everyone else is getting.

Also it negates in my mind, the need to keep the car in "3" around town, as the lower diff reduces lugging for transmission and engine, as well as keep the engine closer to its powerband during in-town driving.

Buy It Now was $200.00. The car did have 57K mi & was known to the guy. He also has 3-4 other cars, 90, 91, 94, 95 that he's parting out. He's sending me his info so I can pass it along here for whoever needs whatever.

Was/is your 4.08 setup your original Q one or a Z transplant? What did Rex do about the ABS thing?
