Buy '07 or '08?

So, took a test drive last week and really liked the Versa. And then, for the first time, I see a couple of Nissan dealer ads. One was offering a Versa sedan with a $1175 discount. And the other was offering 2 HB S with $1321 discount.

My question is ... should I begin polling the dealers for the packages and model I want with the hope they'll give me ~$1300 below MSRP, or should I wait until the '08s roll in where I'll have a better shot at getting what I want and a year younger model?

What do you guys think?

I'd wait for the '08 at this point. Second year of production usually has most of the major kinks worked out. Plus often some features the previous year didnt have.

I think I'll wait for the '08 model too. At first I thought it would be cool to have the original year of the versa but then again...what ^he^ said.

Hopefully they'll at least come out with some new colors. So far I'm not sold on the choices of colors the versa comes in.

I had this same debate when I first started looking for a new car. It wasn't absolutely necessary to get the car ASAP in my case, but I wanted to replace my wife's car, and shopping around tends to make you feel like you should do something sooner than later.

I knew that it wouldn't be long till the '08s came out, but it didn't really swing my decision, as I came home with an '07.

Marleyfan is probably right at this point, though, since it's already mid-June, if you can wait, then you probably should. Dealers will have some incentives to get the '07s out, no doubt, but it probably won't be much considering the low price point of the Versa to begin with (unlike when the '07 G35 sedan came out, you could make out like a bandit with a left-over '06, but that car has a considerably higher sticker).

The one deal you mentioned was for a S-model, and I'm not sure what options you want, but my guess is that such incentives will be more subdued for a well-equipped SL.

As far as working out bugs, however, it would seem that most of the late build date '07s have already taken care of that. But it stands to reason that the new '08s will be just as good if not better.

Glad I'm not the only person with the same question!

When can we expect to see the new '08 models? Any information on them? I'm hoping by August since I have a trip planned towards the end of the month to Seattle.

Rockhound, like you, I'm not in any hurry. I'm even considering waiting for the TDI Jetta wagon (Feb 08). I thought ~10% discount was pretty good. It covers the sales tax here (9.3% but no state income taxes.)

n00b, it's not certain the colors will be changing. I know the 08 Rabbit has exactly the same colors in spite of the engine getting 20 hp and the name changing to Rabbit S. I could like with a couple of the current colors but do prefer the unusual colors. My Mini color is "solid gold". It was their least popular color in '03 and '04 but I think it's fantastic. It gets a lot of attention because you see so few of them.

Martini, I doubt the '08s will be arriving by then, but I'm not certain. Of course the dealers should already have arrival and color information. It's just a matter of asking. (The VW dealer had '08 Rabbit specs in mid-March and production started June 1.)

If the car doesn't change for '08, which will most likely be the case, the only advantage to an 08 would be in resale. And would that resale difference in 5 years be $1300?

If that. Depends entirely on the condition and mileage of the car, as well as other factors such as recalls, etc.

It would appear most of the production kinks were worked out between november and december 06. Note the threads a couple pages back that I started about old and new production versas... and note how the older production versas had significantly more problems than the newer ones. This indicates the point... we know they had a production change sometime around November of last year, and the problems started falling off pretty quickly after that.

I live in Vancouver, and my dealer told me that the 08 models would be available sometime in October or early November. I just couldn't wait that long...

Does anyone know how the 08's will be different than ours? I sure like the Rogue they are coming out with, too.

Some minor, probably more cosmetic, changes are expected for the JDM Tiida in the late fall this year. But a total redesign is probably not going to happen until 2010, according to Nissan insiders. I strongly doubt that the 2008 Versa will be changed in any significant ways.

I'll be buying mine in the fall anyway so I might as well hold out for an '08. I like the body style fine, they can keep that the way it is as far as I'm concerned. The thing I don't like about the colors is 2 shades of grey & 2 shades of blue. What gives? Whatever happened to the primary colors. I want yellow!Or dark green. I don't care if my car looks like a taxi cab, I like having an unpopular colored car, that way nobody will f^%# with it. I would def like to drive a new car off the lot with 50 or less miles on it. It's MY car. Nobody else has ever driven it...lol.

I don't have any idea when the 08's come out, but I do know that I bought mine last July when they had only been out for a week. I bought the 2nd one the dealer ever had. I hate how they call it an 07 when I bought it half a year earlier in 06. Although it makes the car sound younger than it really is. If Nissan decides to wait exactly a year after the release of the 07s to release the 08s then that could be next month. But I doubt it.

I had wanted to get a VW GTI last summer. I went to the dealer and was put on a waiting list to see either the Rabbit or the GTI whichever came in first. It was over a month after I bought the Versa before I got a call from the VW dealer. If they had kept one in stock as a demo I might have waited, or maybe not. We will never know.

Unless there's some major bug between now and the end of the year, I'd buy the 07 later on this year and take the discount. Most of the bugs have been worked out and it doesn't look like there's going to be any major changes for next year.

Since there probably won't be any major changes, I'd take this discount and be able to say I had the model's launch year. I'm hoping with the interest that the new model year might spark that they'll make available some of those awesome accessories that have on the Japanese page for the Tiida.

Actually, yes! I believe that is on the itinerary as is Warped Tour. Not sure how it is going to work cause I will also be flying out of Seattle for a four day trip to Corpus Christi, TX.

I wish people would stop posting things like "since there probably won't be any changes to the 2008"...

It would be better to see if there were ACTUALLY going to be changes to the '08 model, then make a decision; instead of basing a purchasing decision of this magnitude on the conjecture people are putting forward here.

I do grant that these are all conjecture, but by the time the answer is certain, it is quite likely that the decision as to whether you go with '07 or '08 has already been made for you. In other words, by the time the '08s actually are out, just about all if not 100% of the '07s will be gone due to the Versa's popularity.

Sez who? I don't know about that. I live in the bay area & I have never seen a versa on the road. that's 1 reason why I want one, because they arent popular in my part of the country.

That depends on how many are left, and it may not be up to whether or not the V is popular in YOUR area. The fact is, it's a popular car. 16,400 sold in the US in the first 3 months this year... only the Yaris sold more.

If there's a sudden rush on Versas in say, Albuquerue or Portland, then your dealer may not have to "cut their losses", but rather get involved in dealer trades for cars that they can sell more easily than their counterparts.

I'm not saying that one case or the other WILL occur for sure. You can't know until the time has come. But it is a possibility. Remember, this is the same car that last year people were driving more than 3 hours one way to buy, and were getting dealer trades three states away for IF the dealers would even trade at all.

I checked with a dealer in the Denver metro area. He called back last week and said they'd be in showrooms in late July.
