Deeply, deeply distressful. :frown:

My heart goes out to those women and girls - this is one of those things about my former country of residence (although it happens in other countries in that region too) that I absolutely and totally detest and am angry about. Yes, there are many good people trying to change things too, but it is disheartening to see how much is still left to do.

I suggest everyone watch the movie "Midnight Express". This combined with that, you'll be ready for war.

Woah. Is that like a cultural thing? Throwing acid on people when you are pissed at them? Is that like kicking the creepy kid in the balls when he hits on your mom? WTF?

Not sure what you find so God Damned funny.

Here's a little hint, since you are new and only have 5 posts. You want to post on this forum again, keep your laughter about the atrocities that happen to yourself.

You have been warned.

All this does is piss me off, do they even face consequences after doing this? They would definitely get charged with attempted murder if it was in the States.

You can find it for laboratory purposes very easily. Even in the states you can get it shipped to your door with minimal questions. Check Fisher Scientific or Cole Parmer, etc.

If I was one of these acid burn victims, I would personally hunt down the person who did this to me and show them what acid feels like... then I would of course kill them but that's another story. :P

Sure, you tell me this now AFTER I've been soaking my emblems in bleach using the caustic soda in it to strip the plating, this whole weekend...

Beat me to it.

To the original post: that is beyond comprehension. Makes me thankful to live in this country, even as messed up as it is at the moment. At least we (women in general) don't have to worry about BS like this. There is a special place in hell for the men who have done this and a special place in heaven for the women who have fought the physical battle and survived. Also, kudos for them for having the courage to reveal their scars. Hopefully this will help bring the attention needed to bring this torture and abuse to an end.

Yeah, I was thinking lye is still used for cleaning clothes in third world countries, but I think that is alkaline rather than acid...

Acid isn't hard to come by, though the little bit of planning required to use it as a weapon shows some really sick premeditation. I also included a link to an incident in the UK in my original post:

Let's not even go there. That's a chicken**** way out of a problem, same as the morons who want to outlaw guns so no one gets shot.

The REAL question is, why is this tolerated? Why do we, as a nation, continue to condone this human rights nightmare?

I'd bet if you asked every single one of those women, they'd universally say that they would gladly give up their lives to ensure that their daughters and the next generation never has to endure this horrible threat.

Yet we, as a nation, stand idly by, fearful of "offending" their beliefs, and wringing our hands over lesser offenses.

Yeah, they've got some real tough guys over there... :rolleyes Let's see you try that s*** in the US.

My protective nature for women is off the charts, so apologies for my rant. :(

^ No need to apologize you are completely correct. The reason I ask is because I don't see a way to really prevent it you know? Anyone and I mean anyone can get a cup of acid and throw it on someone, it literally takes 30 seconds. I know you can't "ban" acid but besides punishing them after they commit the crime you can't really prevent it... other then using the scare tactic by harshly punishing those who do it.

If that s*** went down in the U.S. I swear everyone on the street would jump on the motherf***er who did it.

Agreed.

To be completely honest, I'm the type of person that will just let things run their course and if I something is needed/has to be done and no one else will step up; then I'll step up. When it comes to women, that is a different story. I honestly believe that if there is one purpose that Men need to be aware of, that is the sole purpose of protecting our women. Now I'm not here to start up the whole "Women don't need men to protect them because they can handle themselves" argument, but I believe that that is our job on this planet. Now when you do the opposite of that and bring harm to a woman, you're stepping over some boundaries. And, when you choose to do that in my presence... well... I might not know you, or the woman you are harming... but I know what is right and what needs to be done... And, I guarantee something will be done...

Now, getting off my soapbox, I honestly don't really give any second thought to this stuff... I kind of just look at it and go about my day (yes, you can call me heartless). But that one picture where the girl was holding a portrait of herself before the acid really got me. It's a shame and I truly am saddened to see pictures of this stuff, but then again it is a cold world out there... are you surprised of the product of such a world?

Shame on our elected leaders for not DEMANDING harsh punishment for those who commit such atrocities.

And I'm not interested in hearing, "That's none of our business." It IS our business.

Those who refuse to comply can wake up to the screaming of incoming missiles - I bet the women pictured above would welcome a chance to spare others their horrifying fate.

Damn straight. When I take over the world, I'm putting you in charge of foreign relations.

And as to your first point: punishment doesn't exist anymore. We don't have a penal system, we have a "correctional system." Which is broken. Because everyone's too much of an effing p**** to actually punish wrongdoing anymore. You can't "correct" the kind of broken that leads a man to throw acid on a woman's face because she rejected him. But you can sure as hell make it an extremely unappealing option for him by making the punishment very, very scary. Of course, most of the "civilized" world would tell me I'm an inhumane bastard for suggesting such a thing.

Allowing wrongdoing to occur when you have the power to prevent it is JUST AS WRONG AS THE ACT ITSELF. If not moreso.

My fellow humans disgust me.
