Well, the SR is just about ready to go in the car, just a few more minor things and I'm good to go.
I spent today mounting the flywheel, clutch, and transmission. My engine came seperated from the transmission, and the baggie that had all the bellhousing bolts in it was torn. I discovered that I was missing all but one bolt that connects the transmission to the block.
The one bolt that I had was the longest one (3.07" I think) so I went to NAPA and bought 7 grade 8.8 bolts with the same thread size but longer. They were 3.5" each but only about an each was threaded.. Using the diagram I got from cyberkreig (
http://cyberkreig.tripod.com/p...s.jpg ) I cut each bolt to the proper length. If you're having to do this yourself, remember to thread a nut onto each bolt before cutting so you are able to clear the threads. Once cut to proper length, I slid them into the corresponding holes in the transmission, and marked the portion of the bolt that was sticking out beyond the bellhousing. Now I knew how much tread was needed on the bolts so I broke out the old tap and die set and went to work. The bolts are 12mmx1.50 thread. Once again, if you have to do this yourself, double check your measurments, make sure you are cutting enough thread onto the bolt and go slow with the cutting.
After about an hour of measuring and double checking, and cutting thread, I had a perfect set of Grade 8 transmission bolts. I took a look at the stock bolt and it's marked as a Grade 6. So now my transmission bolts should in theory be stronger than the stockers.
So now I have $16 in bolts and an hours time, but the transmission is in place and very secure.
I decided to test the starter while I had it out and discovered it didn't turn. I didn't hear the solnoid clicking so I assumed this to be the problem. I removed the solnoid and discoverd that it was seized. I grabbed the part of the solnoid that moves with some vice grips and turned it a bit and it freed up. I removed it, sanded the rust of it, making it nice and smooth, smeared a little grease on it and put it back together. I connected it to my jumper box and it worked perfectly.
If you get a starter that doesn't work, I suggest you try this before you go spending money on a new started. It takes maybe 10 mintues to remove the solnoid and free it up.
Sorry if this post seems pointless, I'm just excited that its getting so close and I figured it my info could help anyone else it was worth something.
