The mechanical climate control unit in my car busted... similar to the pic http://www.nicoclub.com/zerofile/8979/Broke.JPG. The FSM says you can remove it, and I tried to take it out to try to fix it. However, it seems it would be impossible to disconnect it without damaging the wire that runs from the unit to an unforseen place deep within the dash. You see, the four different fan speeds are manipulated by a hook with a wire attached, which is covered in a sheath. You push the fan to 4, to hook pulls farthest away from the sheath, and the wire extends, and you go to 1, the wire is retracted into the sheath.I might not be the best at describing things, but hopefully you get the gist of it.So, I wonder:Is it possible to remove the unit without having to cut this wire? And if it cannot be repaired, does anybody know where I can find a cheap replacement?

alright,Basically, I need to know if anybody has removed the mechanical climate control unit without having to clip the fan speed wire (if you've looked at the unit before, you'll know what i'm talking about). I need to take the unit out to either fix it, or replace it, and am stuck at this part.

Any response would help! Thanks.

U mean u need to remove that wire, that moves the air from the floor, to windshield, to ur face , Etc?If u look closely where the climate control is , u can unclip them from there, they may have 1 or 2 screws holding it, make sure u take a pic to see how it all goes back togethere, If u need a climate control, i have an extra one from a S13.. I ll let it go for cheap..

Excellent! Name a price, and we'll see if we can make a deal (off the forums)

Alright, I know my previous descriptions have been very vague. Today I busted out the digicam and took some pictures of the unit. With colorful labelling, I hope that it makes sense now. I made a mistake too- the wire part is attached to the temperature control.

You see, the 'wire' is firmly attached to the 'hook' part. The 'wire'/'sheath' go on for about a foot under the dash and then go through a wall, so I'm sure that's not where you disconnect it at. How, then, am I able to take the unit out of my car without severing the 'wire' or breaking the action part?

P.S. - This is my first time attaching a photo. Wish me luck.

Alright the fix is super simple, where the "sheath" goes into the controller there is a little clip that you pull out with a flat bladed screwdriver. Then the "sheath" will slide out of the controller and you can unhook the wire. Whatever you do do NOT clip the cire or you will ruin the cable. And BTW that is actually the temp control cable not the fan switch cable. That cable goes to the heater box and controls the door that switches from hot to cold air. hope this helps if not post again and Ill try to help

Hmm... I think mine's got the same problem, except the hot air isn't very hot when it blows out... Shoot, how do I fix that?
