Busted Camshaft, what are chances valves and pistons are destroyed?

I just bought a 91 fastback as a project car. the motor in it has a busted camshaft right near the timing chain. I haven't taken the head off yet. What do you think the chances are that the valve's and pistons are ok?I bought the car mostly for the shape the body and frame were in so it's not the end of the world if the motor is toast.

too bad its a chuki but we can deal with it.

I would suggest getting the head off to see for sure before you junk it. I'd think it would mess up the valves at least, at least one cylinder b/c the valve train stopped and the motor kept spinning for a second or two and slammed into the piston(s). I could be off but makes sense. As for the engine rebuild that thing stronger, better, faster. A ka should be reused long as no cracks are on the block/head,or rod/pistons hanging out the side are present.

really were at in chiefland fl? Good idea if you are going to do p/p by yourself to use a flow bench . Might not get what you were looking for from what you think is good. But a stock head with upgraded valves and a slight shave with better cam(s) would do wonders if you ask me.

this pistons will be fine, however you will see marks on the top of the pistons where the valves hit. you'll want to clean these sharp spots off so you dont have a place for hot spots and an increased chance of detonation. you probably have 6 or so bent valves...

just get another head, it'll be nice for you to be able to go through things before you get he car running seriously. valves are expensive to buy, adn then you'll have to get them cut and lapped. complete heads are a good deal usually.

just had same prob when oil pump started losing pressure, broke a camshaft, depends on where in stroke cycle u broke. if u broke at zero or tdc you may not have any bent valves. u can test valves by removin head and pouring a little bit of water into ports, water should not leak through bottom of valves if they are in good condition. luckily i broke camshaft at tdc and no bent valves
